I have the Risen DVD version, but because of trouble with the DVD
security and reading the DVD I downloaded the Steam version. Therefore
I've decided to post a new comments on the game.

GAME:

I do like Risen but it is the most complex and frustrating
RPG/Adventure game I've played.

It is much, much too easy to 'break' a quest just by doing things in
the wrong order. The game is open-world but Deepsilver did not think
about in the open-world environment a player could do quests in an
unexpected order.

At present there are quests that you must do step-C before step-D, or
to do separate quest first, but ALLOWS a player to do step-D first or
not even do a required separate quest.

Many other games have linked quests, but they do not allow players to
even start a quest if another quest is required first, AND do not
allow player to do a quest-step if another is required first (some
give you a message like 'You need to see NPC-name).

Example: I cannot complete the quest "Test of the Masters" because I
cannot talk to a specific NPC. There are other players that have this
problem with this quest (found via forums). There are other quests
that can get broken.

SETTINGS:

(My Rig = WinXP SP3, GeForce 7900GS 250mb)

Got Risen to run very stable and with good video by changing some
settings as suggested by several WEB sites.

1) [Options][Performance] Turn OFF Depth of Field

2) [Options][Performance] Set Anisotropic to 2X
(default is 8X) which improved stability

3) Using "nVidia Inspector" [Risen] enabled Antialiasing
    (this really improved video)

Antialiasing - Gamma correction = ON
Antialiasing - Line gamma = Enabled
Antialiasing - Mode = Override any application setting
	Antialiasing - Setting = 2x (2x Multisampling)
Antialiasing - Transparency Multisampling = Enabled

I found this confusing in Risen 1st & Risen 2 Dark Waters.
The game sort of throws many quests at the player with it unclear which
is essential to progressing in the main quest & which are optional side
quests.

I have played it by just trying not to be intimidated & muddled n plough on
with whatever
quests are easiest to hand.
Try checking a walkthrough perhaps;

The official patch was 1.01
but there is an Unofficial Patch 1.3 here
http://www.atomicgamer.com/files/102021/risen-patch-1-3-unofficial

Which should cure many of the problem you are finding.

Reminder from my original post, I have the Steam version and will not
apply patches that do not come via Steam.

Also, the Unofficial Patch 1.3 site does not state *exactly* what the
patch fixes, just a generic 'fixes bugs.'

By the way, my Steam version = 1.0.28552.0, is this the patched 1.01?
That is what's so confusing about how some patches are applied, the
patch version not telling what the *game version* will be AFTER
applying a patch.

Most of the changes are in the Unofficial Patch version 1.0 carried forward
& added to in 1.2 & 1.3

I assume if you wanted to install this to a Steam Version it & Steam would
work OK .

I have the dvd version too, but also have Steam installed
on my game box. Seems somebody out there pushed a lot of
updates to my version, and now, I can mix quests all I want.
Still, I always mark a quest, and only do the ones I have
marked ( L-key ). No problem.
