I am a Spanish Ultima fan and I have always wandered
what is the correct pronunciation for "Ultima"; do you say
['ul- ti - ma] or [ul - 'tai -ma]. And, by the way, does it
have any meaning in English?
May be it comes from Spanish. Both "Ultima" and "Avatar"
are Spanish correct words.

"Ultima Thule" was the name used by ancient and medieval geographers for the extreme north. There's a place named Ultima Thule in Ultima I, so Lord British was certainly aware of this. The "ultima" in the Latin phrase means "last" or "extreme" and is presumably the ancestor of the Spanish "ultima" also. "avatar" is an English word also, derived from Sanskrit. Originally I believe it referred to the incarnation of a god, as in Hinduism(?). Now the meaning has shifted to mean something very much like what it does in the game: a personification of some virtue.

I've always said it (and I think the English pronunciation would be) with
the accent on the "ul" making it ul'-ti-ma (I don't know where the accent
mark would go in Spanish to signify this...

Actually, I always say "ULT-TA-MA", thanks for pointing out I'm mispronouncing it. There's a reference in the book "Quest for Clues" that says the game was named Ultimate <Faulty memory & I loaned the book, it could have been something similar> & it was pointed out that the name was already in use/copyrighted ergo Ultima was born.
