I suspect the derivation is Latin rather than Spanish. "Ultima
Thule" was the name used by ancient and medieval geographers for
the extreme north. There's a place named Ultima Thule in Ultima
I, so Lord British was certainly aware of this. The "ultima"
in the Latin phrase means "last" or "extreme" and is presumably
the ancestor of the Spanish "ultima" also.

"avatar" is an English word also, derived from Sanskrit. Originally I
believe it referred to the incarnation of a god, as in Hinduism(?).
Now the meaning has shifted to mean something very much like what
it does in the game: a personification of some virtue.
