Darklands v1.07, on 386i-33/Diamond Speedstar 24x/DOS 6 w/memmaker. One day while walking from town to town, a shrat was being chased by some sort of hound. So, I thought I might protect it and myself by using wood- lore. Sure enough, just like the Darklands of old, I get booted from the game and the message missing XHOUND(S).PIC shows up. Luckily, I had saved the game only a month or so back, and was able to continue onward. The next time I encountered the Schrat situation, I decided to attack the hounds right away, and this worked... This posting is a warning to those playing version 7.0 to avoid the last option on the Schrat screen. It is also a plea for XHOUND.PIC, in case I inadvertantly bumped it out of darkland/pics directory. Stephan Lau Univ of Chicago Graduate Student la...@midway.uchicago.edu

Someone wrote to me saying my upgrade must have been faulty. My advice is this, if the game ever complains about a missing .PIC file then write down it's name. Reboot your computer since the game crashing can cause some problems. Now go into your pics directory and hunt around for a file with a suitably similar name. I'm not sure if it's necessary but you'd better make sure it starts with X as well. Now copy the .PIC file you have chosen to the name of the file that was missing. The game will happily show the new one since the .PIC file are just a graphics file and contain no game data. Allan

I checked in the game root directory and found four .pic files including xhound.pic. Just moved them into the PICS directory and good to go! Philip Walter
