I have been seeing a lot of plaintive cries for help with some of the
puzzles for 7th Guest. I too have found many of them practically impossible,
but being a red blooded programmer, I have done something about it! I have
been putting together various C programs or perl scripts I use to solve (or
help solve) various puzzles in the 7th Guest. (For instance: I just finished
a program to solve the $#@%&! bishop exchange puzzle - it computes what
I believe to be the shortest solution in 36 moves).
I have by no means finished all the programs I want to write (I believe my
next one will have to be a program to play the microscope game), nor will I
write programs for all the puzzles (some of them I find easy to solve "by
hand", and others can't really be solved by computer).
Anyway, I thought I would post this note to see if people want me to post
the collection of programs when I get them finished. Send me mail with your
votes (I probably won't reply to the mail because all my time is taken up
playing 7th Guest, (oh yeh, and working too) :-). If I get a bunch of
requests, I will post the collection to comp.sources.misc when I get it
finished.
P.S. I don't consider it cheating to use my own skills to write a program
to solve a puzzle. It is for you to decide if it is cheating to use a program
someone else wrote :-).
P.P.S. Actually, if there are any computer science teachers out there reading
this note, and you are teaching an algorithms class, I think this would be a
great way to come up with some interesting programming assignments the class
could really get into. They could see the *practical* benefits of knowing
algorithms like breadth first search, minimax, alpha-beta pruning, etc :-).

Yeah, the 7th Guest has some nice exercise for Computer Science students. The 8-Queen puzzle is a classic anyway, and can be found in most Data Structures or Intro to Artificial Intelligence textbooks. I've never seen the 4-Bishop puzzle anywhere, but that's a good one. -- Carl Christensen /~~\_/~\ ,,, Dept. of Computer Science chri...@astro.ocis.temple.edu | #=#==========# | Temple University "Curiouser and curiouser!" - LC \__/~\_/ ``` Philadelphia, PA USA

Has anyone solved that yet? That is the only puzzle I had to cheat at (let the game solve it for me...). Nice ending, by the way... I like the open house idea... When I say "solve" I mean come up with a reliable set of steps to beat the computer... One more thing, at the end... Spoilers: It says "The End... Vol.1 The Seventh Guest" Does this mean that there will be more of the same? Can't wait! Steven
