I agree and I disagree. As an engine, this is the best widget I've
ever seen: polygon enemies and smooth light sourcing and shadowing, the
best 3D-looking levels I've ever seen, and some really nice twists on
monsters (the zombies that have to be blown apart to keep them dead).

However, there's not much of a plot when compared to Duke Nukem 3D
which really grabbed me by the nuts and wouldn't let me go and
had me in convulsive laughing fits every 15 minutes as I discovered
one in-joke after another...

Quake shines in networked mode though. The interface is far and away
the best of any 3D action game... It's just that they haven't delivered
as much of an engaging one player adventure as Duke Nukem...

Quake is more like what 3D Web Browsers SHOULD be like rather than
the mega-slow solid fill polygon crapola that they are even on
high end SGIs... I'd love to see Quake as a plug-in to netscape
to do just that: instant William Gibson World...

Oh well, I've ordered the thing... I've had fun with their unequaled
exploitation of 3D, and I can't wait to play it networked some more...
I'll leave the mass throngs of level designers to make the really
engaging locales...
