Hi all

im somewhere in the middle of playing Riven heres my problem....

I have been using the submarine to goto the diferent places I didnt goto the
school yet, I got to the hanging contraption the one that is a sacrifice for
the big fish and went up the cable but now I cant get back down it, the
submarine is at the bottom of it and there is no other way to get to it. the
walkthrough here says I cant go back down, is this true? Is there a way
down?

http://www.computerhope.com/wriven.htm

if not I will have to start over......that I dont want to do..

I'm afraid I think your misgivings are correct.
A serious flaw in the logic of dad or granddad or whomever
/wrote/ that underwater rail-system. But the whole family is all
screwed up, ain't they?

You can't take anything with you when you go, so if you just want
to access the school to learn what you need to learn there, you
can load [005_I02_InSchool.rvn] from my savegames i've just
uploaded here:

<http://rapidshare.com/files/374660650/MystIISaveGames.zip.html>

Then you can reload and continue on from your own temp savegame.
The 'Save as ...' option is a Good thing.

Thanks for that Etal but while I was waiting for a reply I restarted the
game from the begining and got all the way to the end I only had to cheat
once because of the numbering system, it was for the number 15 I had trouble
with.

Has anyone here actually learnt the D'ni language, its very complex to read
it from the Myst 5 End of Ages book I got with my collectors edition, I
should of read the book for the numbering system as it is there!

Yeah, it (and most adventure-games) goes much quicker going
through a second time when one knows what to do. For me, i had to
consult walkthrough-help at the stone-circle puzzle shortly after
where you were. Many animals looked interchangeable, also hadn't
been able to locate one of the stones.

Not me anyway. I haven't played Myst V yet, nor do i have any
book. I'm on a long hiatus from the series, got stopped in my
progress while in some contraption underneath the planet-fragment
in Myst IV. Too difficult, (was it another sound-puzzle?,) got
too frustrated, so i moved on to other games ... but i should go
back and get through it, even if i'll have to cheat. Someday..

You mean you were able to play myst 4?? No matter what I do I cant get it to
play smoothly enough, I get the 3 second wait when moving around the myst
world so it makes playing it very slow and uncomfortable, what version are
you playing and what is your pc specs? Mine is the 2 disk DVD set. I love
the look of this game but sadly it wont play good on my rigs - some 4
different pcs ive tried - they should make a patch. My main pc is a quad
core.

I have one of these too now. I just re-installed the game on that
machine to have a look-see.

2*DVD release of the game (Red Disk + Blue Disk)(2004-09-05).
Probably version 1.00, but i didn't start the game before
updating. Anyway, option during install i chose 'Complete' and i
have just over 7 GB installed in the chosen install-directory.

While the 1.01 & 1.02 updates are about 40 MB each, the third
1.03 update ([myst4_v1.0_to_v1.03_pc.exe] as downloaded from
Ubisoft) is less then 16 MB and as their names suggests any one
of them updates from the 1.0 (logically 1.00) base game. Today i
used only the 1.03 one and it installed fine and ingame it says
'v1.03' in the lower left on the menu screens.

Thus updated the game plays quite smoothly for me, even without
installing the No-DVD update. There is a transition of something
like a second or so when i move to a new node, but i think of it
as that i'm walking there (not light-speed teleport there) so i
think it works ok. (You have a distinct graphics-card on your
main game-machine i take it, and not (only) an integrated variant?)

( Now, had you asked about Myst III without a No-DVD update,
*that* was totally unplayable for me. Take one step then having
to wait for the disk to spin up, look around from the new
location and meanwhile the disk stopped spinning. Repeat this for
every step in the game. Gee!, and the wear and tear...
thankfully, we don't have to play it like that. )

Someday apparently was/is today.

On reinstalling today, when upping all the graphics-settings and
checking other options i notice one can access a 'help map' with
several hint-levels.. Never remembered that last time when i got
sick of being stuck, will see if i need it now .. if i continue
playing this game now.

Dual or Quad core makes no difference if the program wasn't designed for it.
I just got a new computer and for one the my games I had to alter the ini
file to tell it to ignore multi-cores just to get it to run.

Well, i happened to replay 'Myst II' the other day and
noticed that the above answer is incorrect.

The answer is to simply get off this island-fragment and
come right back. Any time one return to this island-fragment from
any of the other islands the submersible vehicle will have been
reset back onto it's original perched position.

     So, ¿why does this happen?
First i was thinking that one might imagine that while i, the
player, is off on one of the other island-fragments that Gehn,
somehow can access, uses the vehicle and then place it back up on
its parked location.
But that can't be, because it also happens if one later in the
game, with the submersible in the inaccessible position, use the
linking-book in the mini-dome to go to the lava-filled
linking-hub world... where Gehn is just outside the building you
link into and where you can call him to come inside. When one
link back to the 'village-island' the location of the submersible
will have been reset.
I also don't think the natives, the villagers, have been
taught/are allowed to use access/use the submersible, so i don't
believe that 'resetting' is done by them.

So, as i see it, there is an internal flaw in the
game-logic, and it is this unlogic that allows us, the
gameplayers, to always have access to the school, to be able to
learn that which we need to learn there, without having to
'cheat' either by reloading a savegame or by replaying from the
start.
