What are your favourite scenes in adventure games?

Hi!

Subject line says all. (I even spell favorite, favourite)

Mine are (not in a paticular order):

TLE - Concerto scene and the scene where WWI broke out, Cath must say
goodbye to Miss Wolf, the prettiest red-hair heroine ever appeared in a
computer game (don't argue with me on this one, I know I am right).

GK1 - St. George's Bookstore, love the music, the atomosphere and Grace's
sarcasms make me wonder why Gabriel is in financial trouble.

GK3 - the swining axe, frustrating, but beautifully rendered, and maybe the
music helped.

MI 1 - sword fight scene. I just love the humour.

Loom - the crystal building. I don't know why, but it stick to my brain
more than many excellent scenes appeared in The Dig.

MI 3 - the pirate song. My brother adores it.

Countdown - the asylum scared the hell out of me, especially you use Access'
Realsound instead of Soundblaster.

There are probably more, but that's it for now. (Sorry, no Broken Sword,
but definitely no Toonstruck)

Not in any order and just off the top of my head.

Hair : Just kidding.

DOTT : "Have a cappucino..."

GK2 : The opera

COMI : The pirates' song

S&M : Conroy Bumpus' song

Black Dahlia : Pearson spinning animation (so I'm a sucker for a cheap gag)

SQ4 : The gameboxes in the Galleria store

SQ6 : The Soylent Clear song

LSL7 : The Bill Clinton comedy act

The Last Express : The ending and the concert.

The Last Express : The ending and the concert.

I liked that one too.

I also liked Broken sword 1 - talking with the policeman at the outdoor
cafe. He was so comical. I also liked him in BS2.

The Singer's Hall and the opera in GK2 (even though I don't like opera) -
I liked that one.
The Singer's Hall was beautiful. I would love to see Ludwig's Castle in
real life.

I liked a lot of parts in LOOM.

I liked Fernando and Archduke Yip Yap in KQ7. The mockingbird and the
chicken both irritated me very much though.

I'm sure there are lots more, but can't think of them right now.

I thought it was a real game and I rushed to the nearest EB and tried to

Some what fat clerk #1: What was it?
Some what fat clerk #2: (tried not to laugh)
Ashikaga: Hair! I said "Hair." (I pull my hair and tried to show them)
It's an adventure game.
Some what fat clerk #2: We don't have it (without even checking). But we

I would choose the scenes where you break into the govenor's mansion,
struggle with Shinetop, and finally meet Gov. Marley, only to come over
all shy, "Ixrl," "Qrsl," "Flffr?". :)
I also liked the scene where Elaine gets kidnapped, with Guybrush's vow
to save her, and the over-the-top romantic music combining really well.
A special mention also has to go out to the facial close-ups in SoMI, as
they were the best graphics of the series, IMO. I can still picture the
smiling visage of Mancombe Seepgood anytime I close my eyes, and the end
shot of the 'happy' couple was also memorable.

>Loom - the crystal building. I don't know why, but it stick to my brain

Good choice. Very reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz. I loved Loom, but
the crystal city is the only part I can clearly remember now...

>MI 3 - the pirate song. My brother adores it.

Has to be the Battle of the Banjos for me. Just thinking about that one
makes me want to play the game through again. The first sequences of
the game were excellent as well.

Sanitarium:
The way you build up the memories of your own childhood by talking to
the poor critters of the village was really well done. The whole
recollection of what was going on with you and your sister was
surprisingly moving.

GK3:
I didn't like the game as a whole, but the Serpent Rouge sequences
really had me enthralled, and made me wish the rest of the game was like
that.

HHGttG:
The babel fish puzzle. ;)

Let me think of a Top-10:

10. Monkey Island 1: The final sentence after watching all the credits:
"Turn off your computer and go to sleep!"

9. Leisure suit Larry 6: Masturbating in the bathroom until you go
blind. Hilarious!

8. Leisure suit Larry 3: Making love to Pattie.

7. Grim Fandango: The end of the world cutscene.

6. Monkey Island 1: The ending sequence. Perfectly drawn faces and..
- I learned one thing from all this experience.
- What's that?
- Never to pay more than 20$ for a computer game.

5. Loom: The scene when you resurrect the shepherd.
"Thank you.. My friend"
Touching.

4. Phantasmagoria 2: Bob's death. Gorry!

3. Uninvited: Finding my brother in the end was one of the happiest
moments of my teenage life.

2. Journeyman Project 3: Himalayan mountains. Best landscape I ever saw.

AND FINALLY...

1. Gabriel Knight 2: The opera. Need I say more?

Not in any order, and only applicable to graphical adventure games

1. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father - once you get to Germany,
the whole entire sequence, from cleansing your soul to going
to Africa, the finally back to New Orleans for the final showdown.

2. Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within - the wolf hunt scenes

3. Space Quest IV: Radio Shock!

4. The Colonel's Bequest: The surprises in the basement and in the
well.

5. Monkey Island 2 & 3: Hammering Stan in, in MI2 then finding
him in 3.

6. MI1: swordfights.

7. KQ6: The whole ending episode, from Alexander barging in on
the ceremony onto the finale!

8. LSL1 : buying a condom

9. Loom - the death of the kid by the dragon

10. Sanitarium - The whole ghost house episode

I must have forgotten a whole bunch others. Oh well.

Von Zell's cave. It's kind of dark, but he has quite some companies in
there, and he seemed to enjoy his dinner.

The Opera part was good, but so were many other parts. The scenery in the
game is very beautiful in some parts, especially some of the rooms in
Ludwig's Castle in Bavaria? I would love to go there. Richard says he has
been there - but he seems to be a world traveller - lucky guy!!

Well you really should play it ! The opera is my favorite scene in GK2 too.
And I loved going through the museum and the castle.
I must play it again soon.
I know, I'll buy GK2 and GK3 and I'll play the whole series in a run.

I liked the Singers Hall the best. When you clicked on the guide, the
woman mentioned such interesting things about it. In fact, I played all
the tour tapes in the castle and it was so interesting.

All-time, hands-down winner: The epilogue from A Mind Forever
Voyaging. Whoa!
Runners up: The last scene (before the Sultan) in Quest for Glory
II. The final scene in Loom.
Much further down the list, but still on it: The opera from
Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within. The opening and ending movies from
King's Quest IV. The large cut scene that changes player control from
Larry to Patti in Leisure Suit Larry III. The ending you get to Sorcerer
if you kill Belboz (chilling can't quite describe it).
I'm sure there are more, but those are just off the top of my

Just the fact that they went into the trouble to make an opera (well,
part of an opera) for an adventure game is amazing!

I think Planescape has the funniest dialogue since Fallout. The
extremely rude comments the game constantly tempts you to make are
making me eager to play the game for the second time, when I intend to

I love the concert because it was the beautiful music that made it all
so good. I love all the 4 songs in the concert that Anna Wolf plays. I
thought that the music was the best ever in an computer game.

That is Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major by Csar Franck (a Belgian).
It's in post-romantic style and contemporary for the setting of TLE. I am
surprised a young lad like you enjoy it. Even I find romantic style boring
except for Chopin or Schubert, but definitely not this excellent Sonata
which is one of most mature piece by Franck. My lack of interest in
Romanticism might explain why I don't feel excited about Wagner's opera.

I don't care much for Wagner, but I liked the opera in GK2 for the sheer
force of the ending - impressive, dignified and above all NOT the kind of
thing that you expect in an adventure.

This opera is brilliant especially for a computer game. It feels like a
movie. I had to see this opera 4 times because it carries so much drama.

GK2 is a brilliant game, In my opinion it's better than GK1.

I don't know what's wrong with me at the moment. I've only just got

Planescape as a whole game.

And yet...

I'm seriously considering going down to the Law Courts tomorrow, and
having Monkey Island's legal status as The Best Game Ever *revoked*!

Valentine's day coming up soon.
I think I'm going to pop the question to my copy.

Hi!

That's true, and I appreciate Robert Holme for doing such a labourous
effort.

I like all types of Music. Classical Music, Jazz, and Rock. I like that
song I am sexy for my lips. I love the opera in GK2. It was so
brilliant.

I saw the credits for the music. I wish Last Express had a seprate
music CD. When the movie comes out, I hope the music from the game is
included within the movie.

I love the 2nd last of the songs at the end of the concert better than
the first two. These sonette's give TLE an atmosphere no other game has
ever had and probaly will either.

That was the first thing I did after play the ending the second time,
searching whether Smoking Car or Broaderbund would sell the soundtrack on
the web. Much to the dismay, no, so I ordered from Sony Classics, the CD I
mentioned before. It was played by Midori (violin) & Robert McDonald
(piano); excellent recording. The ending (of TLE) was so good and touching
I kept play it again and again. I felt embarassed afterward because it's
almost like I am torturing myself (well, let me keep this NG moderated, and
I am still mentally healthy).

I lost my booklet that comes with the CD. But I do remember that Franck
used leitmotif, a technique mastered by Liszt, to reinforce the main theme.
So each preceding movement is vital to understand later movements. The
first two basically set the two main themes of the whole suits, and you'll
see later two really build up to the climax. There are lots of songs you'll
get tired of listening (e.g. Canon in D, which is so overly played), but I
am still loving that one. This is really off-topic now. Maybe we should
have a TLE club or something (is there one on the web?).

Wagner has absolutely nothing to do with romanticism. His songs are epic and
powerful. I wouldn't call him romantic. So, why you didn't like the opera
again? (which BTW isn't Wagner's of course...)

Well, some people consider Wagner one of the best composers of the
Romanticism period (partly because of his father-in-law Liszt, and yes, he
has a father-in-law). FYI, epical and energetic are characteriscs of
romanticism.

I never said I dislike the opera made by Robert Holme. I said I don't get
too excited about the opera like Trekies would if there is any Star Trek
reference in a game.

Wagner was not a romantic AFAIK and -trust me- I know some things about that
kind of music. Anyway, that's not an issue.

All right. But you should see *my* reactions whenever there is a reference

I hardly heard any of the songs because I was too busy running around
the rest of the train trying to break into passengers' rooms! Only when
I had finished did I go to the concert for the ending (how rude of me!)

My brother plays classical piano anyway, and I'm sick of concerts so I
avoid them at all costs, even in computer games unless it is necessary.

Yes. I liked that too =o) You also had the option to cough and disturb
everyone in the concert which I quite enjoyed!

There are games in which you love whole atmosphere
like in MI1. Emotional moments are best in some
Sierra games like QFG and GK games. And some
of Sierra games are most thoughtful (it
goes again for those two series).
I have to admit that although SQ games are
short there are some good 'directing' like
when steps of invisible android appear in
SQ3 and Rog peeking at sequel police in
from sewer in SQ4.
And some puzzles make also fine moments.
But then again there is special thread for
best puzzle.

Favorite scene? Well, it's more like a moment. Anyone remember back in
Maniac Mansion how you can get Weird Ed's hamster. I liked to take it
down to the kitchen and stick it in the microwave until it was crispy.
Then you take it and give it back to Ed. {-:

The ending of The Last Express and the concerto scene are definite classics.
The prior is very remorseful and I just like the atmosphere of the latter
(the look of the two performers get into what they were doing enhanced the
realism).

The followings are not my favorites, but very memorable (and arranged in no
particular order).

GK2, the conspiracy against Ludwig II cutscene (when Ludwig ordered to hide
the lost opera).

Also the underdog, Return of the Phantom has some memorable scenes in it (I
guess it's the general atmosphere that caught me).

The beginning of the Countdown. The whole asylum freaks me.

The pirate song from MI3. The crystal house of the Loom. The final stage
of the Dig, etc. There are many more probably, but these are the ones that
stick out of my mind. I would add the final confrontation in Planescape:
Torment, but it's an RPG.

Monkey island 3
those pirates singing a song on that ship.
I don't know why, but it moved me

Also the part when I united man/woman on King's quest 6
(I don't remember number, Alexander plays main character)
Seems I'm an old sentimental fool.

Bill Clinton, huh? That should be interesting. I'm looking
forward to it. (I just finished LSL5)

I *was* looking forwarded to GK2 also, since everyone seems to
like this opera scene so much, but I'm not much into Romantic or
post-Romantic anything. Then again, not many people like opera
at all and yet everyone liked this, so maybe... (As long as I
don't get locked out like Diane.)

Favorite? The cow at the castle in Journeyman 2. I was
laughing so hard I didn't even realize I'd been killed.

Just about every "action" scene in LSL1 and finding creative ways to kill
Roger Wilco in Space Quest 2. Oh yeah, the energizer bunny in SQ3 or 4, I
can't quite remember which, had me roaring as it was so unexpected.

More recently in Neverhood when the building decends and squishes the sheep
like creature, one of the other creatures poops! Bathroom humor I know, but
I didn't think I'd ever stop laughing.

Eating the third apple in Neverhood left me with tears in my eyes, I am somewhat

My absolute favorite moment comes from Simon the Sorcerer, where he's
talking to an archeologist:

Dr Von Jones: Don't bother me boy. I'm searching for the missing link
between man and vegetable.
Simon: You mean Dan Quale?
