I managed to get in on the closed beta

Is anybody in the group interested in playing this when it gets to
open beta?

I'm fairly sure I'm end up trying this game, although maybe not until
release.

Argh, I wish they'd stop remaking Quake 3 (because that is essentially
what Champions is, even if it is new levels and engine) and remake
Quake 1; tighten up the story and gameplay and slap on a new can of
paint, sort of like they did with Doom.

I mean, I get that there are a lot of people who love Quake 3-style
multiplayer, but it's been done and done again over the years. Give
the original some lovin', I say! Even Quake 2 got a remake/sequel; I
wanna blast me some chainsaw-wielding ogres in high-res, dammit! Is
that so wrong?

Well Quake's real success story was mostly a multiplayer one, anyway.
This NG has much less of a focus on multiplayer than single overall,
which is not representative of the PC gaming community at large. And,
players that are not into a particular judge of a given genre are
typically poor judges of games within a genre. Quake Champions will
seem no different than Q3 to them; but constrast that with the fact
that among the true Quake community, there is growing outrage that
Quake Champions is too different and misses the point of the earlier
games. Personally I have no dog in this fight, because I think
sometimes change is good so I try to go in with an open mind. I
enjoyed the hell out of Doom multiplayer last year and look forward to
another good online twitch game.

Overall, multiplayer is what kept Quake going all those years and
evolved into class-based team play and sensationally popular titles
like Team Fortress, which is still one of the most played games,
daily, on Steam (ten years after release no less!).

So, demand around Quake is heavily weighted toward multiplayer.

But yes, I agree it would be cool to see a remake of Quake 1. My
biggest concern is that it would end up feeling too much like the
recent Doom title.

Also part of what I liked about Q1 was the quirky and surreal
atmosphere that the limits on technology provided at the time. For
example, sometimes "blocky" looking graphics force the player to take
their mind off visuals and focus on the gameplay. Making the visuals
too nice, or even trying to hard to reach for realism actually can
distract from the elements of a game that will hold my interest
long-term.

What are your impressions of the closed beta?

I'm on the beta waiting list.

Bearing in mind the NDA, I'm really enjoying it. I wish I'd had more
time with it this weekend, but what time I did have to play it was
very enjoyable and nostalgic.

Good to hear the nostalgic vibe is there. They say visuospatial
challenges like 3d shooters, especially twitch ones, are one of the
best ways to fend of the aging process. So, I'm expecting this game
to pull me into a time warp, returning me to all of my attributes from
20 years ago, complete with all my old bad habits and misgivings.

Hmm, my current girlfriend is not going to like that... at all.
