This one got dismal reviews, and I bypassed it when it was released
last year (it's rare that I'll pay full price for a single-player only
game anyway).

My initial impression is that I probably won't finish it, but
certainly won't regret the $10 purchase. General consensus seems to
be that with patches, its a much better game than it was upon release.

I've been playing this game off and on, and all I can say is if this
one goes on sale for $10 again, grab it! I realize the sale price is
a big reason I like it, so I would definitely wait for a sale, but I
think if you like this type of game even at $15 it would still be a
must-buy.

It's not the greatest game ever made, but an open Cryengine shooter
with a cool plot/premise is rarely available for ten bucks so soon
after original release date is pretty rare.

It's not without flaws. I'm enjoying the trek through the battered
city, but there are places where you see textures you've seen before,
and it gives a sense of deja vu that reminds you not to expect the
detail of a real city. And of course, plenty of doors are unopenable,
like most of these games, so it tries to give the illusion of "go
anywhere" without really pulling it off. But there is still a pretty
big world and no shortage of areas you can go.

Although it might seem similar to the increasingly tiresome Far Cry
format when the features are described or listed on paper, I think it
actually feels different enough when actually played.

Try it on the next 75% off sale, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
Ignore all the bad press it got upon release and approach it with an
open mind, they've fixed much sense then. Just get a refund if you
really think its not worth $10.

I did, thanks! Haven't gotten to it though, The Division has
surprisingly really grabbed my attention the last couple weeks.

Here is a tip that might help you greatly once you start playing, you
might make a mental note to come back to it when you do:

If you encounter an opening where your movement is restricted and it
doesn't feel like it should be, try hacking at the opening thoroughly
as if it had invisible obstacles blocking it, because unfortunately
there may be. I'm noticing some visual bugs, that are seemingly
minor, but they can be extremely confusing until you realize what's
going on.

For example there was a window I needed to go into in order to take
over an abandoned apartment. I cleared away the boards blocking it,
and tried to enter the window opening. I wasn't able to, and there
was no VISIBLE (operative term) reason why, so I somehow convinced
myself that this particular window must be too narrow, I need to find
another way in.

This is a very minor spoiler, but if you just skip to about 1:08 you
can see him enter that same window.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eHaBEj-PK4

Notice breaking the lower boards wasn't enough, he tried to jump in
and was rejected because the top boards. Luckily, he could see them,
they weren't showing for me. I didn't think about the "invisible
object" bug, so I spent probably 20 minutes exploring for
alternatives, randomly killing KPA etc before I watched the above and
realized what had happened.

The other tip: If you're like me, you sometimes mark waypoints that
are not directly on the location you need to go to, just because it
prevents the game from guiding the player too much. I sometimes like
to land within a few yards of the target, but without guiding icons
showing me specifically where to go or which door to open, just more
immersive without them.

However, in that case I should have set the waypoint exactly on the
target the moment things stopped making sense. It would have shown me
that this was indeed the window I needed, and the only way in. It was
only when I set the waypoint ron the target destination that I saw the
guides and realized I was dealing with a game bug.

It's been a few days since I've played (not only that but any games),
but I do plan to get back to it. You're probably already farther
along than I am, I think I'm about 6+ hrs in.

I think the main story is about 12 hrs to complete, and you can double
that through side quests if you like (I rarely do in an SP game
because I find it just burns me out on the game faster).
