Ho-ho-ho!

We're in the home stretch now; three more games to go!

Today's game is:

Shadowrun Returns
------------------------
Returns? For a long-time table-top role-player like me, I was never
aware that it was ever gone. But I guess for those who only knew the
franchise from the Sega/Nintendo game 20 years prior, it was a return,
and welcome one too. Shadowrun is a unique mix of cyberpunk and
fantasy; a "you got chococlate in my peanut butter" mixture that makes
the combination greater than its constituent parts. While I personally
wished the game had included more detailed NPCs and greater variety
and number of maps, nonetheless it is a solid tactical RPG that
wonderfully captures much of what made the table-top game so
appealing.

Platform: Windows PC
Distributor: Steam
Key: MZAV3-E26EX-2E2RP

Apparently there was a MegaCD Shadowrun game too, released in 1996.
Not to mention the 2007 FPS. Return? Shadowrun never really /left/.

Ho-ho-ho!

Warning to any who were thinking of buying this (or the bundle);

This game contains a game stopping bug that will lock the game so solid
you can't even quit but have to kill the process.

And apparently it's been known for over 3 years now.

Still unfixed, and I am guessing, never going to be.

You are instead expected to kill the process, shut down steam, restart
steam, restart game, reload last save and repeat until you get lucky
enough to get past the bug, if you ever do.

Mhh I played the game through about 2 years ago, and never ran into this
bug. Maybe I was lucky.

The thread I read mentioned a few people who had.

It's in the Universal Brotherhood mission, the inner sanctum fight with
the bugs.

People who killed off both bugs in one round, sometimes avoided the bug
completely.
Other people crashed every time if they had a rigger with drones.
Or didn't kill the bugs fast enough, or a host of other situations.
The devs tried blaming it on manual saves, only people who didn't do any
manual saves in the mission, got the bug.

For me, after the dialog, the bugs appeared and combat started and my
character never even got a turn at combat, first the bugs and minions,
then it skipped straight to my 3 henchmen.
2 rounds later, my 3rd henchman got 2/3 attacks and then got interrupted
by the boss doing another conversation taunt and dialog choices, after
which it still showed his gun in the corner, but was my character's turn
at combat apparently.
Only, nothing worked, nothing could be targeted, you couldn't access the
menu or even hit esc. You could pan the map around, and animations
were still happening, but the UI was totally disabled.

The disgusting thing is, in the thread I read, a developer addressed
this bug saying they were working on it - dated July, 2014, yet it's
still happening _exactly_ as it was described then.

A question for you; did you ever get a combat where you got to go
first?

Even in combats where *I* initiate combat through dialog, the enemy gets
to go first.
Not once did I ever get to attack first, and sometimes my character got
their turn at combat skipped completely for no apparent reason.

Actually it has been a while, so I really cannot remember. All I
remember from the game
was that there was a lot of written story and heavy tactical combat. And
I did not particularily liked the cyberspace missions but the rest of
the game was good.

The game mostly has a mostly nice atmosphere and fairly good dialog, a
lot of which doesn't seem to matter at all and/or is directly linked to
bugs.

The cyberspace stuff was done incredibly badly in my opinion;
It's boring and tedious at the best of times and you can clear areas and
then just have enemies materialize out of nowhere around you, which
makes tactical combat, (this is supposed to be a tactical combat game
after all,) impossible. What exactly are you expected to do when at
the end of your round of moves 4 guys materialize around you and get
their round of combat instantly.
You are dead before you have a chance to do anything from something
there is no possible defense from.

Extremely jarring having combat in meatspace and cyberspace stuff
alternating. Isn't thought supposed to be hundreds, if not thousands,
of times faster than physical movement - shouldn't decking basically be
jack in, do whatever you came to do and then jack out, and maybe 2
seconds has passed?

Have these guys ever read ANY Cyberpunk?
Cyberspace and meatspace running at massively different speeds in pretty
much a staple of it.

They've done it as though the decker is using a C64 and an acoustic
coupler modem and is typing on a clunky old keyboard.

Also extremely annoying when they go into turn based stuff forcing
individual movement of characters, when there are no enemies and thus
absolutely no point in being in turn based mode.

Oh in about 17 rounds of movement, you'll reach a point where your
decker will need to jack in, so you need to have individual control of
him.

Yeah, so go into turn based mode when we enter that room, not 8
completely empty rooms and hallways earlier.
