Windows 10 Anniversary Update version 1607 upgrade is nagging away to be
installed.
But I've read the info & cant see that any of the new features
are of interest / relevance for me.
Its big & I don't like my system clogged up with unwanted unused stuff.
But do we have to HAVE it ?
After much Googling I'm still not sure

I'm still using Windows 7 as my O/S .
I have Windows 10 installed & occasionally start it up as I assume
we will have to move to that sooner or later.
Or though I'm OK with Win 7 (skipped Win 8)
I've got my games & progs. working in it

I think they're mostly to do with the 'Live' store. I noticed that the 'buy' option was missing for some of the games. When I did a bit of research I discovered that the Anniversary Update would fix that issue and some other store related things. Apart from that, it doesn't seem to be much other than some cosmetic and interface changes to Windows 10 itself. I am very partial to Windows 10. But I do have 2 machines running Windows 7 plus another PC running XP for my older games and as a reminder of how Windows has changed over the years. I also have 2 laptops, one running Windows 10 and one running Vista. My latest project is to build a PC running Windows 98. I'm having major problems finding drivers for just about everything in the PC though. I think I need to look for much older parts. I looked on ebay and Amazon at some old P4's and P3's. They sell for ridiculously high prices, as do the single components from those days as well. Mrs Rob will not be amused. -- Rob

The update is non-optional for consumers which means enterprises have some level of flexibility due to different needs than consumers. Think of all modern operating systems as just a constantly evolving entity with regular mandatory patches. MacOS and Linux are the same way, if you don't patch them they become a gaping security hole and basically just stop working. It's possible that MS made a mistake by calling it an "anniversary update", because the name might sound like a flowers and balloons event that is optional, as in "I don't care much for my wife these days so I think I will not show up for my 30th anniversary dinner and go to a strip club instead". But it's not like that. As much as people complain about Windows, as someone who regularly uses both that and MacOS, more and more I appreciate Microsoft's commitment to backward compatibility. Apple throws all of that completely out the window, breaking all of your shit with a new patch at their whim. With Windows you can still run software from decades ago on the latest and greatest. The 1% of users who use Linux on the desktop would have to comment on how well backward compatibility is maintained there, I can't name any applications that I really need to run there. It has some uses on the server to be sure, and I do run Linux in virtuals from time to time during the course of my work, but aside from that it might as well not exist.

You're probably better looking on Craigslist or something similar. Also instead of a Pentium 4, you might be better off with an AMD CPU from that era, as they were faster despite running at slower clock rates. For Windows 98 you're looking for is a computer with a single core CPU (any extra cores will be ignored), an AGP port and no more than 1G of RAM (and more than 512M requires workarounds). I don't think there were many AGP cards released that don't have Windows 98 drivers, and I don't think there are any PCI-Express cards that supported it. You don't want a hard drive bigger than 120G, though it shouldn't matter if your motherboard uses IDE or SATA, as the later can always be used in IDE compatible mode. Windows 10 Anniversary Update version 1607 upgrade
It was optional at release but now seems to be compulsory.
BUT reported that it does not install / is not offered
on Tablets with only 1GB RAM.
I see no sign of it on my Lynx 7"
I have installed it now.
Bit of nightmare with lengthy download and v. lengthy install time.
On my i7 4.5Ghz ,2200 Mhz 16GB DDR3 RAM
about 3 hours (plus more cause it crashed 1st attempt)
Installation on Microsoft Surface Pro 2 was much more straight forward
by just leaving it on all night.
I then found start-up was incredibly slow & shut down took like forever.
Cured this (hopefully) by repeatedly restarting in Safe Mode.
Interestingly the size of the Windows folder has reduced considerably
to 18.5 GB total but given as only 12.5 GB on disc (uses compression)
so that pleases me even if all the new features are of no interest.
Rumour has it that Cracked Pirate copies do not have there Cracking broken.
And 'Free' upgraded ones are also OK.

Nope, it was a feature update. Non optional for consumers. http://www.techrepublic.com/article/the-windows-10-anniversary-update-is-upon-us-ready-or-not/ http://www.zdnet.com/article/first-look-microsofts-windows-10-anniversary-update/ http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/why-is-windows-10-anniversary-update-optional/045095ad-91cd-4ab6-829c-5877fb1b6909
