Everyone has a different experience with Damark...mine was a nightmare.
I purchased a Turbo oven from them and the thing didn't work - right out
of the box. They were very good about an exchange, but still...

Then again, my friends have purchased many things from them without a
problem.

I'd say go for 'em both. I've bought lots of stuff from Damark that was
factory-serviced. The law doesn't really permit them to say it meet orignial
specs if it doesn't. At least, that's the way I see it. My radar detectors,
modem, and cordless phone were all fac. serviced. I have had zero problems with
any of them. Damark is a good company, at least in the experiences I have had
with them. I'd trust them.

I like the selection and prices Damark offers, but a word of caution on
some of the more complicated purchases. I bought a Gateway 2000 P60
early this year from them that had been factory-serviced and was selling
for about $400 less than a new one from Gateway. However, I didn't
receive the non-installed software such as Encarta, MS Golf, etc. I
called Gateway for the software, but they said it was Damark's respon-
sibility. I called Damark many times and they promise to send it, but
6 months later I still haven't received anything.

I still would have bought the computer even if I had known what would
happen as I am very satisfied with it, but the poor customer service and
support in this one instance shows there are sometimes drawbacks to
purchasing from them.

I've tried two purchases from them and both didn't work properly. I sent
them back, but it took forever to get the credit to my account. I think
some of the items that really need fixing are overlooked or they are not
thoroughly scrutinized. I probably won't buy from them again.

I've bought 2 radio scanners that were serviced. They came with a
photo-copied manual. Both work just fine. Many of the so called factory
serviced are just returns that have been checked out and found to be working.
Since they are returns, they can't be sold as new. Others that have been
fixed most probably have been more thourgly tested than new ones that are only
spot checked.

Excellent point, Dan. For many years my employer had factory-serviced
photographic items for sale to employees. Your observations about the
quality control on bulk- versus individual-spection systems are valid.

However, I have stopped buying from Damark. They have adopted the practice
of high-pressuring you about shelling out about $50 for their buyers-club
membership. On my recent (and final) order-call the pressure was uncivil.
I declined repeatedly and at last had to threaten to cancel the order if
the operator didn't shut up his face. Who needs the hassle when Damark's
prices are beatable on many items?
