Hi, The Dust demo from the current PCgamer has destroyed my windows! I installed
it, and besides being pissed that it installed WIN32S without asking me, after it
had me click on reboot windows, I was left at the C prompt! I tried restoring my
win.ini file, running setup, etc but still no windows! I'll have to check the dates
on all my windows files, I guess, but if you know which files this clobbers, I'd
appreciate a list. Also, don't install that Flucking DUST demo!!!

I really appreciate the quality control over there at PC gamer!!!

At the "C" prompt did you see a message about why Windows could not restart? On
mine it said that "dva.386" had duplicate entries in my system.ini file. Once I
removed one of the entries everything worked fine. BTW I do agree that we should
have been warned before it began add Win32s to our systems. Even better, it should
have checked to see if Win32s was already installed.

I had the same problem, only I didn't get any error messages the first
time Windows "crashed". After about two hours of futzing, I finally
figured it out. Unfortunately, I couldn't get DUST to reinstall
because I had wiped the WIN32S subdirectory, but didn't know which
files under SYSTEM had to go (I eventually figured it out). All that
and I don't even like the game! :P Anywho... that's life. TTFN.

I never liked PC Gamer after their "Outhouse" review. They claim to be #1, but
their quality smells like #2 to me. Buy CGW instead. Their CD this month
works.

This is why I make a backup of my WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files
before I install ANYTHING in Windows. So when the Dust demo screwed up
Windows, I just restored WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI from the backup!
(I think the Dust demo screwed around with SYSTEM.INI, not WIN.INI)

All you have to do is this: From your Windows directory, type

COPY WIN.INI WIN.BAK
COPY SYSTEM.INI SYSTEM.BAK

Then, if something (like Dust) screws up Windows, just type

COPY WIN.BAK WIN.INI
COPY SYSTEM.BAK SYSTEM.INI

Unless the program screwed up something else (like one of the .DLL
files), this will almost always restore your Windows to its regular state.
I agree with you on one thing, though: I hate programs that install files
to /WINDOWS or /WINDOWS/SYSTEM without asking first.

Hi,

Nope, I didn't get any error messages, just DOS prompt. After checking dates
and times on the files, I found that it did mess with system.ini and after
using a backup copy of that, I was able to get back to windows. Never tried
the demo again!!
