This is why I make a backup of my WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files
before I install ANYTHING in Windows. So when the Dust demo screwed up
Windows, I just restored WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI from the backup!
(I think the Dust demo screwed around with SYSTEM.INI, not WIN.INI)
All you have to do is this: From your Windows directory, type
COPY WIN.INI WIN.BAK
COPY SYSTEM.INI SYSTEM.BAK
Then, if something (like Dust) screws up Windows, just type
COPY WIN.BAK WIN.INI
COPY SYSTEM.BAK SYSTEM.INI
Unless the program screwed up something else (like one of the .DLL
files), this will almost always restore your Windows to its regular state.
I agree with you on one thing, though: I hate programs that install files
to /WINDOWS or /WINDOWS/SYSTEM without asking first.
