I've found no difference at all when I "shut down" to DOS mode (ie.
exit Windows).

Everything is fine here, not a problem yet.

Ahh, but there is a difference. When you choose Restart in MS-DOS mode,
all your really doing is running a shell without most(that is MOST) of
Windows 95 not running. You're still in a shell though. Type exit and
you'll see that it goes right back into W95. Now if you go and boot up
with command prompt only, you have to type win to get it started and exit
doesn't do anything.

Not really. Shutting down to MS-DOS mode only loads a little TSR that
sits there and will launch Win95 when you exit this command prompt.
That little bit of Win95 isn't anything more than that.

I installed it last weekend. Everything seems to work, but I'm a
little disappointed that I couldn't run my old DOS EMS games in
windowed mode. If anything, the old Dos/Win3.1 ran them more
conveniently.

Am I missing something here?

Hmmmm... that's odd. They seem to run fine for me. I'm
thinking of games such as X-Wing which runs fine from Windows 95. Try
changing the properties of the PIF file and set it to do not detect
Windows, Full Screen Mode and turn off Screensaver...

My descent and warcraft ran a little slower and warcraft crashed at
random times during play. OS/2 hasn't had this problem...but I have had
"OS/2 Native" problems!

Getting on the net was a snap. If you are using a straight terminal
package like Procomm, it is just a matter of telling procomm where the
modem is and go. If you want slip or ppp, just use the dial-up
networking. Works like a charm. You can continue to use your old email
package without any changes or if you want to use MS Exchange just get
a MAPI mail server for it. This can be obtained by getting the latest
beta of Netscape (I haven't tried this one) or Microsofts Internet
Explorer, which is 100% free from their web site
(www.windows,microsoft.com). I have not had ONE OUNCE of trouble.
ALTHOUGH You CAN use the old tcpman or something like that to connect.
That works fine too.

I haven't had a lick of problems...got on the net 15 minutes after
install...without the plus package. As far as games, I've yet to have one not
work perfectly...that includes Doom, Magic Carpet, Abuse demo, Descent, Dark
Forces, etc...(can't remember them all...you get the idea.

You shouldn't believe everything you hear on TV. Setting up the
TCP/IP is a bit of a pain, but networking almost always is.
Everything defaults to MSN, of course, but that's easily fixed.

Did you get Magic Carpet working from within Win95, or from the DOS
prompt? I got the problem where it loads fine into Win95 until you
hit Enter for the map, then crashes. Rumor has it that it checks for
the CD-ROM at this point (copy protection) in a non-portable manner,
fails the check, and crashes.

Everything else I've tried works great (P90, 16 MB). Some users have
reported significant slowdowns and CD-ROM problems. Booting to
vanilla DOS seems to always work, even if it's annoying.

Here's the deal. Apparently if you use MSN or use Microsoft's Web Browser
your existing winsock.dll in WINDOWS directory will be renamed to winsock.old,
and Microsoft's winsock.dll will be added in its place. This has resulted
in people trying out MSN, then being unable to connect to their previous
Internet provider 'cause their net apps are looking for a different
winsock.dll. It's probably not an evil conspiracy (the problem is
easily fixed by putting your winsock.dll in a different directory), but
it is an example of Microsoft being careless and arrogant. (Note: all
the details here may not be 100% correct; I'm typing this from memory.)

Now back to your regularly scheduled action gaming.

Actually, my internet connection got better when I switched. I am
running the new Netscape 1.2b6 and using the built in MS Winsocket.
Under WFW I would get locked up within an hour of Web. Now I NEVER get a
lockup. Also, once you setup your modem you NEVER set it up again. All
the other programs just use it. Same with the Winsocket.

Internet use is one of the reasons I have stuck with 95'.

And to think, for the past 5 years my modem set-up has been ATZ because I
manually set-up each modem once then stored that into the one of the
configurations.

Hmmm.... while for ease of use I use Microsoft's TCP/IP stack, I still use
Netscape/News Xpress/Eudora. But I DID try out Microsoft's browser. (I like
Netscape better). Lemme check.

[pulling up Find, looking for winsock.dll]

Nah, it's still there, where it was before. I know it works because
Microsoft's stack won't work with my Telnet program, so when I need to Telnet,
I use my old Winsock stack.

Apparently it is not so straight forward to set your system up for CSLIP
connections. I'm connected via PPP through Windows 95 and I have had
no problems at all running any sort of Internet software... in fact it is
great being able to run the NT versions of most packages (they multitask a
hell of a lot better than their 16-bit counterparts). I currently run FTP32
(NT Version), WinVN NT, Eudora, Win95 Telnet... all of which run perfectly.

As for games... I don't normally play games while in the GUI environment
though I've had little trouble those times that I have. All of my games have
run from a DOS v7.0 DOS prompt, and I'd say that just about all the games I've
run under the GUI environment continue to run (though I must admit that I
haven't tested it extensively -- why burden your games by running them under a
GUI?). I find that loading games takes a lot longer while under the GUI
environment, though there is little or no change in the playing speed of
the game (running on a DX2/66 and a DX4/100). I used to multitask X-Wing CD
and Procomm v2.11 all the time... no loss in CPS rates at 14.4k and the game
played like it did in DOS. It was fantastic...

I did have troubles when doing 28.8k (or higher) transfers. Too many
interrupts causes overrun errors and choppy game play.

I havent had any problems with setting up a PPP conection under
win95, Doom loads a little slower but once the game starts its
fine. Also Ive heard of a new Win 95 ver of Doom, but I dont
plan on wasting my money. Most software works fine and if
theres a problem under Win, just boot into Dos compat mode. I
used to be a serious Dos fanatic(you couldnt have forced me to
look at windows as an Os). I think Win 95 is a great OS but it
can use some improvements, for instance I have a problem
getting both Joysticks to be recognized, so its no good for two
player games. James

I've been hooked up to the internet via Windows 95 for quite a few
months. Dial-Up-Networking is, IMHO, a breeze to set up compared to
WinSock, and I can use any of the 32 bit internet access tools that have
been available.

Now that Windows 95 has been released, I picked up the Plus package with
makes it even easier to hook up and, within minutes, I had Microsoft
Exchange set up as my mail program and I was using the Web Browser they
included (which is basically Netscape).

What? Win95 ships with PPP/SLIP conectivity. I use it with a local
service provider and with MSN, no problems. All my winsock aps, like
freeagent et al, work great.
