How do you figure? With the exception of HL2 and Doom3, it's quite
possible to play just about any game on the market with a PC that was
high-end from 2 or 3 years ago. Doom3 and HalfLife2 are rather unique in
that they actually use today's cards to the fullest, as opposed to
previous games which were quickly outpaced by the release schedule of the
graphics card vendors. People quickly figured out that you didn't need a
$500 card to play most games, when a even the $200 cards were considered
overkill. Even if you wanted that shiny new $500 card, you just had to
wait 2 or 3 months and the price would drop by 30-40%.

If you're forking out that much money that often, you're getting badly
ripped off. My current PC is about 3 years old, and is capable of running
anything on the shelves - including Doom3 and HL2, albeit, just barely.
It cost me about $1200.

Even the *reccomended* setups for games still point to systems about 2
years old. P4-2Ghz, 256MB RAM, 128MB-based video card. How pricey is
that? You really can't even buy a processor that "slow" anymore.

Yeah, even an "entry level" gamer system is still going to cost more than
a console, but it's not like a PC is a single-purpose machine. But at the
same time, these claims about having to buy new hardware every 3/6/12
months is an exaggeration. Only an idiot would feel the need to buy
something new each and everytime a newer piece of kit came out. And while
I'm sure there are suckers out there who do that, they're few and far
between.

Bah. SLI is a waste of money. The last time SLI was around, a year or so
later, a new card came out with more power on a single card than you got
with SLI - not to mention the fact that SLI went away when AGP came
about... Ugh, what a bad idea that was. I can't believe people were
willing to spend upwards of a thousand dollars on their video system, when
you were still seeing exponential improvements every 6 to 9 months.
