I've always been a big fan of the FO series and even though the were a
few comments doing the rounds about some 'teething' problems but I still
couldn't resist so I got it anyway.

The first thing to say is that is just an evolution of the tried and
tested formal of FO:3 and FO:NV so if, like me, you enjoyed them you'll
enjoy this.

That means it's a game about exploration and as always there's lots of
places to visit and it's easy to see something in the distance and just
take a wander over to see what's there. For me that has always been the
best part of the FO series, the places you come across, the stories they
tell and that rare quality of actually caring about the characters. Yes
there are kill and collect quests and yes you know that the simple ones
will always have a twist but they are still at a level that has more
complexity and interest than many RPGs.

The have of course been some changes. The first thing you notice is
that, as you'd expect, the graphics are more shiny shiny and the
character animations have been improved (they could hardly have got
worse). This really does mean that you can at least play it as a
traditional FPS, well just about anyway and only use VATS when you feel
the need.

Crafting is also more advanced so you can now upgrade not only weapons
and armour but you also have the chance to build your own settlement
although I've not explored the latter. Personally I've never been a big
fan of crafting but here it's not so bad and so far I've never felt that
not optimising crafting would stop me enjoying the game. Armour itself
is also now a mix and match affair so choose what you have on your arms,
legs and chest. One rather silly decision would seem to be that
different base clothes support different amounts or armour so you can't
keep you tux on and use armour.

What seems like a subtle change but turns out not to be quite so subtle
is that weapons no longer need to be repaired. So you remember all of
that carrying multiple weapons just for repairing or if you firearm of
choice became worn-out. Not any more and it's ammo that is most important.

The two downsides so far have been a bug where I was stuck in one place
and some lack of polish whether from the local map being somewhat
quirky, almost to the point of being useless, to no indication of how
you see multiple pages of text on terminals. No biggies but annoying
never the less.

The one real problem is with the main quest (well I presume it is
anyway). You son was kidnapped and you need to find him. So what's the
problem with this then, well as it's not really my son I'm never going
to have the same level of connection with it. Yep, I'll carry on looking
for him but I just need to pop out into the Wasteland for a day or so to
collect the junk I need to upgrade my 10mm pistol. Normally the main
quest is something you can be interested in or not a still feel that's
viable as a character. This time that's problematic.

Overall I'm really enjoying it so far and I can see me putting many,
many hours into it just to explore the world and I fear my son must wait.
