    I had a launchday R9 290X and recently moved to a FuryX, and was and am 
very happy with both for newer games.

    A few of the variables are:  What resolution will you game at?  1080p or 
lower is easy for any mid-range card like the 270X or 960, while 1440p or 
higher I'd prefer a 290X or 970.  Budget is another, but don't aim too low, 
as you may want future features like Freesync or GSync support, which only 
the newer cards have.  VR devices are almost here, and I'd try to stay at or 
above Valve's VR system requirements — NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent 
or greater
