Carmack/id always supported OpenGL, but it seemed the huge majority of companies just developed for DirectX. We have been at this spot in the road before. I remember a time in the late 90's where new commercial games like Descent (and Heavy Gear II, because I lived for those stupid giant robot games) were on the shelf in separate boxed Linux versions. I had a hell of a time remembering the name of the company doing this, but it was Loki software... There website still exists in its 2002 form like a Linux game graveyard. Its cool to look at, and they had some major companies on board... http://www.lokigames.com/
