There was an article in today(Wensday)'s edition of Wall Street Jounal
that reports that Intel named P6 processor "Pentium Pro", instead of the
"Pentium2" as expected by the company observers. The naming of P6 as
Pentium Pro basically confirms the performence problem with P6; P6 does
not provide much of a performence jump over P5, or Pentium, so Intel
cannot call P6 "Pentium2".
The problem with P6 is that it has a hard time emulating 16bit X86
instructions; any operating system or applications that contain even a
small portion of 16bit codes will be penalized on P6. This includes all
DOS, Windows for Workgroup and below, and 16bit applications running on
them. Quasi 32bit OS with large portions of 16bit codes like Windows95
and OS2 will run on P6 about same speed or slightly slower than on P5.
The only OS and applications that will benefit from running on P6 are
the "pure" 32bit OS like WindowsNT, various Unixs, and Netware, and 32bit
clean applications running on them. These programs running P6 will see a
performence jump of 30~60% over similarly clocked P5.
This is not a good news for PC gamers, since P6 will not improve the
excution speed of DOS and Windows95 games over similarly clocked P5.
