Ouch! ISA Bus! Ugh! What I would recomend in the least is a 486DX4-100
and a new motherboard. I just recently purchased an AMI Deep Green
Motherboard, and it is by far the best choice I could have made. There
might be better boards out there, but I have always liked AMI, and I
needed a board that could handle my 8 megs of 70ns 30 pin SIMMs. The
main slowdown with your 486 is the ISA bus. VLB releases a lot of the
slowdown and allows the Vid card to talk to the CPU at the same clock
speed as the CPU. ISA bus allows up to 8mhz., which can be overclocked,
but no way near to the speed of VLB. PCI looks even faster, but I still
think it is too new of a technology to jump onto the emerging standard.
You can get an AMD 486DX4-100 and a decent motherboard for about $300.
You will then need a VLB (or PCI depending on the mboard) card to take
advantage of the speed increase. You still can run your ISA card on it,
but don't expect dramatic results. Get a Hercules Stingray, it has the
best all around performance. Video cards are a matter of personal
preference, and I wanted one that worked semi-well in DOS, Windoze, and
OS/2. I hope that helps. If you decide to just get a VLB motherboard,
you can still keep the 486DX2-66 and add it to the board. Later you can
add a DX4 if you want. DX4's get about a 50% increase in speed over
DX2s. They are pretty slick. They can outperform slower Pentium systems
like the P60. That's all I can think of right now.
