TASM is not really necessary to start with. I wouldn't recommend Turbo Pascal, as
it exists only on the PC, and it seems to compile quicker while producing slower
code than C. I'd say get a C or C++ compiler. There are lots of C/C++ compilers
out there, so it all depends on how much you want to spend. There is one C/C++
compiler that is absolutely FREE and produces 32 bit code, namely GNU cc (the
MSDOS variant is called DJGPP). gcc may be rather daunting to starting programmers
however, as it is basically just a recompiled unix version with command line
only. It does make good code though.

Good commercial C/C++ packages come from Borland (neat integrated editor/debugger/
compiler and TASM included; only disadvantage: no 32bit) and Watcom (from the
DOS4GW dosextender; I haven't tried this one, but from what I've read it must be
very good indeed).

So, it all comes down to what you already know about programming and how much you
want to spend on the compiler. If you know some C or C++ I can really recommend
DJGPP (besides, it doesn't cost you anything, so you can delete it if you don't
like it).
