This shows that Win95 is DOS, much more than people think. OS/2 EMULATES
a PC for you (using very, very efficient hardware tricks for this). It
gives you 99.9% compatibility, but won't let you do 10,000 interrupts
per second or 386+ memory management register swaps. It really SHOULD
not allow you this. That some games are programmed to generate 10,000
interrupts for sound, or kludge with their own memory manager, will only
mean that they will be off the world really soon, because Windows and
Windows 95 (the only OSses allowing these nasty hardware kludges in the
first place) will be off the world really soon.
NT can run far less programs than OS/2 can, because it uses an even more
restricted PC "emulation." Games will very, very quickly be written onto
APIs instead of onto hardware, because they all will need to run on NT
in a year or so, when Win 95 has been killed by its maker to be replaced
by NT Lite 7.0.
Win95 is a kludge, a bridge from DOS (hardware) to NT (API).
And I still seriously think that gaming machines and serious work machines
should not necessarily run the same OS.
