I used to know this, but with all the Windows stuff I've been using now I can't remember. I am trying to run XCOM - UFO Defense from WIN98. This is a formatted HD, from scratch install, and that means that WIN98 set up the sound card. When I run the game I get music but no sound effects. I'm running it from in a DOS session, in other words I made a short cut from the file manager and that's how I start the game. Can anyone tell me how I can get sound effects in the game? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I run win98 as well and I don't get this problem. Not to insult your intelligence, but do you quit windows and go to the DOS prompt? Not being an expert, but I have been able to run the set up from DOS with no problem, but I am running TFTD - I know there are some differences, but how this effects each game I would not like to say. Sorry if it's not very helpful, but I thought I would try to give another perspective. Detonate

Hey no problem, it's a legit question. The problem is that I'm running this on a SCSI CDROM drive (it's a Pinnacle CDR actually) and I have no idea how to set this thing up for a DOS session. I suppose I'm going to have to ask Pinnacle, but they're a last resort assistance situation. Not real helpful those folks. Basically when I go to DOS I only have a mouse, no CD whatsoever. When I do a Win98/DOS window, I do have all the needed drivers, but no sound effects. It's weird, no sound but I get music? But the CD does work so I could install the game with no problem. When I set up my icon to really drop to DOS (not a window) it just locks up. I'm it's because it tries to hit a CD that doesn't exist for my DOS session. But keep those ideas coming! And thanks. And thanks. > I didn't see the first post, so I'm not sure if this is relevant but: I had a problem when I installed XCOM on my P166 using a DOS box for the install. After installing, it would run the intro movie, then crash. Finallly, I had to make a DOS mode shortcut with custom bootfiles, allowing high enough conventional memory and loading CDROM drivers. Then after I installed from this true DOS mode, the game ran just fine in DOS windows, and I could have XCOM Util in one window, and the game in the other, and ALt-Tab back and forth. Someone else had the same problem and fixed it the same way. If you can't figure out how to get the CD in a true DOS session, then one thing you might try is to install it in a true DOS session onto a ZIP disk on another computer and move the ZIP disk to yours, or do it over a LAN..either by installing it in a true DOS mode on the other computer and copying it over, or using the other machine's CDROM (could get complicated). Once the game is installed, you can copy the whole thing all over the place and not worry. I moved it from my p166 to my new P2 that way. Nick J
