I didn't see the first post, so I'm not sure if this is relevant but:

I had a problem when I installed XCOM on my P166 using a DOS box for the
install. After installing, it would run the intro movie, then crash.
Finallly, I had to make a DOS mode shortcut with custom bootfiles, allowing
high enough conventional memory and loading CDROM drivers. Then after I
installed from this true DOS mode, the game ran just fine in DOS windows,
and I could have XCOM Util in one window, and the game in the other, and
ALt-Tab back and forth.

Someone else had the same problem and fixed it the same way.

If you can't figure out how to get the CD in a true DOS session, then one
thing you might try is to install it in a true DOS session onto a ZIP disk
on another computer and move the ZIP disk to yours, or do it over a
LAN..either by installing it in a true DOS mode on the other computer and
copying it over, or using the other machine's CDROM (could get complicated).
Once the game is installed, you can copy the whole thing all over the place
and not worry. I moved it from my p166 to my new P2 that way.
