Interceptor - 2 questions

I've been playing Interceptor on and off since its been released and two
questions spring to mind:

1: what does the tractor beam do? - I've used it for towing disabled aliens
around/into hyperspace to take back to base BUT simply leaving the alien
floating in space results in it being recovered anyway so why bother.

2: How long does the "story" ( the bits of intercepted signals) go on for -
I've wiped out every alien installation and after a week a new base appears
and the game continues. How do I "win"?!!

Any help much appreciated

I believe the automatic recovery to be an unintentional mistake in the
game, you are ment to have to use them but currently you dont I am
hoping this will be patched up.
My main use for the tractor beam was to ignore the warnings in the
report and to challenge aliens to tug-of-war. I found this tactic to be
very effective early on as you can use this to disable the wraths using
it faster than you can destroy them using conventional weapons, and as
your mass is larger than that of the small wraith you can get away with
it with minimum damage which is repaied instantly upon arrival back at
base anyway.

As well as interceting messages you have to collect the componants the
aliens are transporting when you have collected enough of these you
scientists will make a guess or two and work out what the aliens are up
to. Then and only then will they get down to the creation of the
solution.

Never thought of using it as a weapon - that sounds like a pretty good
trick - especially as you can develope the tractor beam before you get the
tachyon pulsers. Next time I play I'll remeber that one

I've intercepted every component coming my way and now the stream of alien
convoys has dried up - I guess I just have to keep looking

Thanks
