Bad form to reply to ones own post, but in the absence of any Sonic
technology, I think I was doomed to the kind of "fighting retreat" that
certain European nations are famous for! :)

LOL, yeah. Sometimes you have to take your victories where you can
(ie, no lost troops).

In this case, it was not unlike Monty Python, "run away!" for a few turns...

I'll ignore the polotical remark and add:

I fought a shipping attack once vs lobstermen using gauss rifles and
grenades.

After what was a rather LONg battle I ended up falling back to the ship and
leaving. with each soldier having 1 extra clip and each lobsterman taking
almost a full clip to knock down I was running out of ammo and had zero
chance of completing the first stage of the mission, let alone stage 2. Now
once you use Sonic Pulsars, one of thos weakens them to the point that 3
hits from a guass rifle can knock them down. But once again your stepping
into the Sonic research tree. :(

I think regular grenades just tickle them, but you do get some satisfaction
in throwning the grenade and they do provide some smoke cover.

That's why you pack High Explosive. The range is limited but it's
almost as good as a sonic pulser for damage.

Aye, one of the critters walked through four Sonic Pulsars though... :(

Since Lobstermen do have some 'armor', i'm wondering how often the Dart
Pistol or Jet Harpoon actually penetrate the armor.

I'm going to have to try some of the concentional X-Com weaponry, because
right now I'm using Gauss, and nothing stops them... I'm still researching
into proper Sonic weaponry, and Sonic Pulsars only slow them down. Shoot,
everything I have only slows them down.

I finally managed to take one down yesterday, and was in the middle of
cheering when his buddy came at me like a tank, and *cough cough sudden
power failure cough*.

Conventional weaponry is only useful for increasing your marksmanship
scores versus lobstermen.

because

I usually throw 6 Pulsars or High Explosives at each lobsterman.

Well with 100++ Hits and a Dart gun going something like 16, you are going
to need tons of ammo, a Lobster without any weapons and a position to fire
from where the lobsterman cannot use the inherent hands attack.

An excercise in PAIN

Which reminds me. Tanks! the cannon rounds are effective vs lobstermen,
although you still need to hit em 2-3 times.

It's been a while, but I believe you could accomplish a lobsterman mission
with conventional weapons, but it would take a long, long time and a lot of
explosive ordinance :-)

Conventional projectile weapons, i.e. Gauss, just won't cut it - takes too
long, too chancy and just not worth the effort. However, your one chance in
your conventional arsenal is the electroprod jobbie... that is, if you feel
like going head to head with a lobsterman, that is!?

Judicial use of grenades (pack LOTS) and electroprods could well get you
results, if you're au fait with tactics & strategic issues with TFTD.

Either way, best of luck trooper!

Always, always, always research the pulsars first when it comes to sonic
technology!

Yes. It requires enough munitions to sink a battleship. I don't think it's
impossible to do, but I've yet to do it.

Yes, it can work quite well - excepting it takes quite a few TUs to give
them a prod (!) and it's not 100% effective, more like 75%.

> Judicial use of grenades (pack LOTS) and electroprods could well get you

Too many grenades, really - most Lobstermen take three to six Sonic Pulsars.
If you're lucky, you'll take one out armed with a Heavy Thermic Lance and
three Sonic Pulsars, but the amount of ordance required to do this is
excessive...

> Either way, best of luck trooper!

Yes. It's quite a challenge, I've been working my way through the Terror
Site as something to vent away my frustrations. Fighting a retreat is about
the best I can manage, though...
