I have an odd question.

Does anything you do when shooting alien ships down affect how many aliens
are left alive in them, or is it random?

If you shoot it down, there are usually fewer aliens. When entering a
crashed ship, there are often bodies inside.

I think it's random, but I'm not sure. The best way to test is probably to
shoot a UFO down, then do a save & reload a few times to see the state of
the UFO in tactical - that's usually a good indication of number of crash
survivors.

Serious damage and the engines blowing up do seem to remove a lot of the
alien *soldiers* ... the command crew (more dangerous than the
soldiers!) are in heavily shielded parts, usually (especially so in the
case of the larger, multi-level, ships) and are more likely to survive

The late-game heavy interceptor weapons are capable of doing
considerable damage ... and the engine set up of the terror ship (XCom
1) means blow one engine up and they *all* go. I've never seen a
*partial* blow up ... if you've been lucky, can I have a screen grab,
please :-)

(just for interest, want to see what it looks like (mustn't post
binaries to text usenet groups!!) )

It also depends on what weapon was used. If you use the old-fashioned
chain gun, more aliens would be left alive than if you had use missiles.

the small ufo's normally blow up completely (entirely destroyed, not shot
down) if you use big weapons on them. so if you're sick of cleanup missions
you can use fussion bombs on everything :) they prettymuch vapourize
smaller ufos

The very smallest blow up with pretty much *any* weapons ... and plasma
cannons are sufficient to bring the biggest alien vessels down in X-Com
UFO unknown ... plasma cannons are my *favourite* interceptor weapons
