Kinda fun. Since we got 2 extra item upgrades so we now have 4 I
decided to check guildox a few mins ago. It seems like Asia has 6 item
upgrades while the rest of us (EU/US/Oceania) have 4 item upgrades.
Click a random char and check ther char on their armory by clicking the
small arrow at the nick. ^^

Oh noze dey haz better lootz , iz a tragedy I tell you :-)
Looks like it, the ilvls are more than 16 above base

It looks like the top end on us/eu/oc have already done 14-16 upgrades
At 4 per k thats 12 in the bank plus the weekly cap.
So this event could give 20 upgrades which is 10 slots, if you had a
maximum valour points.

Wait a month to restock the bank , then on again , maybe?

Not quite like 80 ilvl on one item since ilvl isn't exactly linear but a
pretty big boost when there is little other room to increase.
About the difference from going green to blue on fully upgraded items.

An extra 2 for asia don't quite make it green->epic.

ilvl *effects*, less incoming hits against a greater pool with more
outgoing decreasing the time the hits land before target dies
it multiplies

Well. I still wonder why Asia can do 24 upgrade levels to their gear
while you and I can do 16 upgrade levels to our gear. It hasnt made me
sleepless, but I find it odd.
No matter what its still US/EU guilds like Vodka and Paragon that tops
the first kill charts. Maybe thats the reason? Because maybe asians
really cant play when it comes to hardcore modes so Blizz gives them an
advantage. ;)

I think Blizz have said it's something to do with different gaming
culture in Asia, they have a few other things different too (they
don't pay monthly subs, for example), and they're really big on 25-man
raiding, so their version of the game still has the 25-man = harder
then 10-man thing that we had back in Wrath. Hence the higher ilvls in
25. At least, I think it's harder, although I've no idea how they go
about tuning it differently for different continents, seems a lot of
hassle. Maybe it's not harder and they just get higher ilvl anyway!

I hear asia has pay per hour, quickly google ->
http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1212259-How-does-the-Asian-payment-model-work-for-WoW
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/1670091903?page=3

So not can't play but with more cafe culture and pay per hour they don't
spend hours late at night at home on long raids and pack a lot into
limited time.
Actually cafe culture could be good for guilds and raids if people
regularly get together in the same room.

I suppose that is a sort of can't play, which also applies to me
but then I *really* can't play either , or rather I prefer to *play* not
work at a game, so I tell myself :-)

It doesn't make much difference if they had 1000 upgrades , it is only
relative and it doesn't affect other wow players. Only out of wow epeen
rankings are affected. I beieve for quite some time they were an
expansion behind so this is just the swing catching up.

Getting off topic I often hear people discounting asia and
particularly chinese products as rubbish. This partly is true , they
build to a price and if you buy something at 1/4 price it is going to
have corners cut BUT they have the skills and organisation to make it
that cheap and deliver in weeks. Blame ourselves for unreasonable
expectations and being cheap, not them for delivering what we ask for.

Your explanation makes sense to me. :)

Does anyone know what sort of latencies they see in asia generally.. and are
the 6 upgrades a latency-compensation feature?

Actually while on the matter of latency, when Blizz changed the ingame
latency figures to home+world I saw an immediate drop in the total reported,
even though the actual* lancy changed not one bit.

let me explain what mean by actual(*) - While playing Wrath and doing ICC
my guild was stumped by the defiles the LK dropped since most of our guild
was in Western Australia which is a looong way from the US servers. Other
players in New Zealand were seeing the defiles way ahead of us (since the
cable routes through NZ before heading to the East coast of Australia then
cross country to us in the West) and were frustrated by how slow we were at
getting clear .. eventually we hit on having the NZ players call who had
defile and to tell us which direction to move to get clear of it over Vent.
We saw a small improvement .. at the time I was also experimenting with
different VOIP programs and found Mumble compression was far better than
Vent, and the latency was less than 1/2 - so the raid switched to Mumble and
that my friends, was the day we downed the Llitch King :) .. By having the
NZ players do as before, call defile for us to move a second before we saw
the raid alert. a whole second. We'd been playing over one whole second
behind the NZ players.

there were other telltale signs the numbers were false as well - my wife and
I sitting side by side did all manner of jump-off-high-things or
run-stop-run tests to see how much of a delay occurred, and they were always
over a second and they have remained over a second.

.. now as soon as Blizz changed to home +world we saw our numbers here
drop - before the absolute minimum I ever saw was around the 970 mark (which
was still a highly optimistic number, not reflected by game play ) and post
split I was seeing 305 world + 320 home numbers. - roughly 600's. and it
remains rare that my wfe's numbers and mine match. And our silly jump off
the roof speed tests still show latencies well over a second. Pre split
1200ms was common, many days I played at 1500ms, and we generally only threw
in the towel when it hit 1800ms or higher

now it's almost always 320 + 305

I may see home of 400 while she sees 290, but both of us pinging our router
or the closest exchange or each others will see numbers substantially lower
and 99% of the time our ping times will match precisely.

I'm rambling again ..

My point is, if Asia has latency issues that makes game play difficult then
compensating them with 6 slot pgrades makes sense. but Australian players
with 1 second + latency will never get such help, because they play on
english speaking servers and anyone seeing some aussie player running about
with a 6 slot upgrade is going to scream the house down about how unfair
that it.

They have server farms in korea and taiwan, but that could have changed.
Latency should be a lot less than piping it all the way acroos the
pacific and back so I doubt it is that.
Upgrades only make a difference to out of game epeen, and they are
going away anyway.

Assuming you packets were via nz, but there are other cables. Some
isps also have US pops and channels data goes more or less express
rather than switched which can speed things up.
http://www.cablemap.info/
From adelaide I get 200-300 regularly now via internode and optus,
thats pretty much zero delay apart from physics.

But anywhere else with extra stages or add satellite up/down..pretty
much impossible to do anything requiring timing by austar and I doubt
the new Ka-band satellites would be any better for ping.
NBN? nobloodynearer :-)

Actually ping isn't so bad, it is variable ping that makes it really
hard. Do I lead by ~500ms? nope, missed, was I early or late??
Try again, got it, try again, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, but an hour ago I
could hit every time.
I have traced some packets going US-south america first, because
Argentina is obviously the shortest route, even if there is no cable
across the south pole :-) Some even take off clear across
asia, europe,us, I suppose the asia-us link is congested.
Though mostly it is adel-melb-syd-guam-us rather than via nz now, that
probably depends on isp and their cable tunneling deals..

> My point is, if Asia has latency issues that makes game play difficult then

Why would it?, they aren't playing against anyone else so it makes no
difference if they have none or 100. A little mitigation and dps has
little effect on being defeated by mechanics.

You shouldn't be at 1 second any more in a major city, change isps.
In the country? it will suck, it always sucks, thats why we get a zone
tax allowance :-)

Blizzard don't want to put a server farm here, we aren't actually
entitled to expect much for a $US15 monthly fee and a relatively small
user base.

just play ah , 48 hour ping to sell :-)

and this

I get 266 ms to us wow servers right now
410 to taiwan and 750 to korea
I suppose there isn't any tunnel to them and there may be some
congestion going on between korea/japan/tw/china
right now it is evening peak in oz, korea , tw,
east asia , japan is same time zone as oz central time

Not much point playing asian wow from here.

ugh. I played beta Cata and every bug report I posted was clearly ignored.
every single one. everything I encountered that was broken was still
broken in-game when Cata eventually dropped

at that point I decided the whole 'beta tester' concept was more a pr stunt

If a bug report isn't a critical gameplay bug but just scenery, text,
flavour, it goes onto the pile.
If it gains enough complaints it may get actioned.
Alphas and betas have many versions, tracking a lot [1000's], of
complaints by version is complex so usually prior version complaints
just go in the bitbucket.
Only the reporters care or remember.

e.g. not wow, but fairly common..
3 people sort 30,000 bug reports a day, 200 are serious and get elevated,
tomorrow , 3 people sort 30,000 bug reports a day, 200 are serious and
get elevated
next day, 3 people sort 30,000 bug reports a day, 200 are serious and
get elevated
...
Many are duplicates, or at least lumped into the pile of the bug the
reviewers think it belongs in.
At the weekly review 3 urgent bugs and 50 large bugs are discussed,
12 get slated for examination 200,000 minor bug reports for 500 minor
bugs are just numbers on a list and are never looked at again.
At the end of the alpha/beta version cycle they are 4th decimal point on
a graph of allocated effort/cost.
Here is where our complains and 1500 others about a typo show on the
beta graph --->.<---

Here is where our complains and 1500 others about a typo on a release
show on the graph ---><---

Yeah, reporting is pretty much a waste of time :-)
