WOW, the Reader's Digest version....

As I've mentioned in another thread, I'm leveling an Affliction Warlock. This
is the first toon I've tried leveling from start, at full tilt, in a very
long time.

He's tricked out in full heirlooms, and with the guild buff has a 55% XP boost.
My basic strategy is to queue for instances, and quest while waiting for them
to pop.

With the quests available on the first run through an instance, at lvl 50, an
instance generates roughly a full level of XP. Single quests give nearly 10%
of a level each.

As a result, I'm outgrowing zones before I've even half completed them, and
skipping some entirely. I'm missing a lot of quest lines I've enjoyed in the
past. But I want to get this toon up to 90 quickly.

I'm also getting some strangeness due to not picking up every flight point - at
one time I flew from SW to Burning Steppes, and found my toon routed via Light's
Hope Chapel in Eastern Plaguelands.

You will have flying soon so you won't need them anyway :-)
or at least can do a quick fly around and pick strategic ones up just so
you can get places on afk. A little bit more xp as well.

XP will slow down a bit soon but still you can miss big chunks of zones
up until pandaland. Even there you can pretty much be at 87 and go to
the white tiger,i.e opening up eternal blossoms, after the first zone.

Of course eternal blossoms isn't anymore and there are a lot of sha
between the gate and the city so may as well wait a couple more levels
anyway. Even 90 is simple and then you get flying straight away.

Remember to check out the vendors in new expansions to fill non herloom
slots, there is a big step in mob whackage at each. Instance gear may
make up for skipping the higher quest rewards but it can't hurt to just
check.
Not so necessary for a lock, I am just showing melee/tank mentality.

Back a few years I did the same with my Shaman (from level 15), my druid
(from level 33) and my worgen warrior (from level 15). I did it not so much
because I wanted it to be quick but because I had never healed or tanked
before and wanted to gain as much experience while levelling up so I
wouldn't need to learn at max level where people expect you to know your
stuff. The shaman healed his way from 15 to 85, the two others tanked their
way from 33 to 65 and from 15 to 42.

It probably wasn't quite as much XP back then, but even so, I found
levelling through instances with questing during the wait time (though the
wait times were usually very short) to be very quick. I especially enjoye
this as I had levelled 6 other characters to various levels by questing, so
I didn't mind missing some quest lines too much.

Every once in a while I would travel around the zones to pick up the flight
points jus to avoid this. Not so much of a problem what with auto-porting
into instances when the group was complete, though.

Yeah. And when you enter a completed dungeon its usually gives you
50-75% of a full bar anyway. :)

When I leveled my shammy recently I guess the exp ratio between zone
questing and dungeons was 20%/80%. I remember I once took a FP from
Exodar to Stonetalon Mountains and I entered 4 or 5 dungeons before I
even got to SM. When I finally got there all the quests were green so I
hearthed back to exodar and picked up a new questing zone.

I've just dinged 58. Still in heirlooms, and quest rewards or best available
in AH. I'm considering whether to hit Outland right away, or wait till 60. Any
opinions?

The only real question is flying.
I -think- you can get it at 60 now then fly in outland so planing to
pass through a capital and pick it up on the way to outland is an
options. Or leave your hearth near a trainer for a quick trip back.
[ also I am unsure about any new trainers, the outland one used to be a
pain to get to but now they are in SW/Orig ]

Otherwise and most probably
Outland now
XP is higher, so 60 is closer, rewards are higher and your gear should
be fine

The only other thing may be not lvl qualifying for some quests or if you
are gathering mats for or leveling gathering professions. Which you
should have left until flying then gone back :-)

Same thing goes for Northrend. Some people prefer a little bit longer in
Nagrand for the scenery but I -think- you can get Cold Weather Flying
from the city trainer at 68 so should be able to fly in northrend after
that. That should speed up Northrend a LOT.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Flight#Riding_trainers
http://www.wowwiki.com/Cold_Weather_Flying
[ so many patches so many changes, so few neurons left :-) ]

Just a suggestion, depending on how badly you want to get to 90 ASAP.
Since it is still you playing other chars and leveling slows once you
get to 85+ you may consider resting it for a week and doing other stuff.
At those levels a levels worth of rested xp makes much more difference.

Outland flying trainer moved to Honor Hold/Thrallmar ages ago
(actually, before they ecisted in SW/Org, I believe), so that's no
problem :-) Although if you have high rep with SW/Org you may prefer
to save some gold and get it there, that said, it's not a hgue saving
now the price has come down!

Yep, also do Ramparts and you'll be about 60 already with all those
heirlooms, so not too much time on the ground waiting to get squished
by a fel reaver ;-)

I tend not to memorise NPC much any more, they change, memory can be wrong.
Just google, get it , then forget it.

That's pretty much my thought - flying would be very helpful, but isn't
required. One of my reasons to go early is to get the Outland greens and
blues earlier - they're a big step up on the older gear.

Great minds think alike. I decided this one would be a miner/engineer.
However, I levelled up into areas where I couldn't mine very quickly,
and decided to let it go until I had flying.

I think Nagrand is one of my favorite zones in the game.

Double up on exp on quests and mobs in Outland. And still very easy to
kill.

a miner engineer
you poor deluded fool , run, just RUN and never ever look back :-)
that was my first character

Actually engineering probably isn't that bad. The problem was I thought
the various items may help since levelling was so sloooooow back then,
and you had to hand pick each mined item and walk uphill both ways to
get the other mats. Nubish thinking it mattered and a lot of DOH

They don't help, most are useless, a lot just fail and explode.
Do gems randomly explode? no, do potions randomly poison you? no.
So it was a lot of wasted effort at levels where it was a pain to put
them together.
You won't have that temptation or noob DOHlusion so it may be not so
bad. Or it may just really suck rocks.
[ given the mining mats requirement, yes it does suck rocks :-) ]

For the mining you have a choice , get flying then get mining up to
outland level, or just forget about it for a long time.
Flying really makes it very very very easy, you get a bit of xp from
ores not too low, a bit of exploration xp when it may still be significant.

Most older ores fetch very good prices, which means they are going to be
expensive to get without mining so the time to mine them now probably
equates to the time later, apart from the occasional current level mob
ambush, but you can handle that anyway. Flying makes getting to those
hard to get at nodes so much easier.
The mining buff is very slight and would make little difference to a
warlock.

[ this assumes the recipies haven't been nerfed or mats relaxed from
WOTLK days , some probably have ]

Check thorium and fel iron ore prices, see if they are sky high or dirt
cheap. If cheap enough you could just smelt your way, you need the bars
anyway, BUT then you should level engineering so you don't smelt too many.
Ores can be prospected so usually bring a higher price than bars.
[ check the AH bar prices as well ]
http://www.wow-professions.com/wowguides/wow-mining-leveling-guide-with-smelting

In northrend cobalt is the stopper, you need a lot of cobalt but there
just aren't a lot of nodes.
Cobalt in the first areas, saronite and titanium in the upper ares.
Grab every single cobalt node you can at first, flying again makes it
easier but really they are sparse and if anyone is farming you will be
lucky to get enough to level engineering as you pass through.
Given that you are also passing very quickly.
Saronite is everywhere and easily bought or farmed later, titanium is
the rare so grab them when you see them.
Saying that at least it isn't you and 1,000 others trying to farm.
Any left over should get a good price anyway.
The gemstones with the nodes don't hurt either. most fetch around 2-3
ores each on the AH

In cata and panda you barely get to mount before stumbling across a node
BUT there tend to be more farmers.
Cata you can at least fly and not so many farmers.

Panda you are at level and still on the ground, go for a node, draw a
mob, 3 ilvl-gazillion farmers with flight zoom in with a flurry of wings
mine! MINE!! MINE !! then fly away , leaving just the sound of a pack of
manic rabbits not so quietly grinding you into the dust.

That's what I did - of course, I was 58 <= lvl < 60 for only a couple of
hours, dinging 60 in one of the Hellfire Penninsula instances. I now have
(slow) flying, which of course makes many things much easier.

But before I got it...
I had heard that the mobs for the Valentine daily gave good XP, so I decided
to try that out - but it was in Winterspring. I'd leveled my Gnome Afflock
purely in Eastern Kingdoms, and had no FPs in Kalimdor. I also knew that to
pass the tunnel to Winterspring, I'd need to build rep with the faction there,
which I could only do in Felwood. So ... boat to Ru'thern Village, fly to
Darkshore, ride entire length of Darkshore, Ashenvale, and Felwood, only
to discover that the tunnel faction now starts out as 'unfriendly', and I
could have just flown to Moonglade and saved myself half an hour.

My main is a herbalist/alchemist. I maxed farming, and found that planting
Enigma seeds gives me enough mats that I usually don't need to herb at all.
Making flasks is my main money-maker.

I thought engineering might be fun, but if it's such a drag I'll reconsider.
Mining just went with that well. Its also (weakly) recommended at icy-veins.

just a cutnpast example I can't say if they are good guides
the first doesn't seem to use any of the saronite
you can see it does use a heap of cobalt, which means you may as well

as you mine

the engineering saronite recipes usually need eternals, which you get
with mining anyway

It may be, I am very very biased :-)

What it produces may be of some individual use in endgame, and a few
convenience doodads mostly depricated but not much marketable.
On occasion blizzard gift engineering with some big ticket luxury item
but their usefulness barely lasts a patch and they usually need a packet
of expensive mats.

Blingtron is always popular to put down, and you get a regular lot of
packages, it may even pay for itself in a couple of years :-)
Lets see, chance of a chopper drop 0.015% [ assuming the drops are even
accurate], hmm 50/50 chance of a drop in 6 years.
At least the packages don't explode and take 30% health.

Mining on the other hand is well worth levelling if you don't have one
already if only to have access to mats or help the guild farm if it
needs some.

Even back in Vanilla it was possible to run through the tunnel with only 2
or 3 deaths, which was an easy way to get the Winterspring flight path
without the tunnel rep grind. I suspect that today with the adjusted mobs
and improved gear it might have been possible with only 1 or 2 deaths. Of
course, with them at friendly, it's even easier :-)

Cheers

After all that, the XP wasn't that great. I did get every flightpath I passed,
so it wasn't a wasted effort, but I'm not going to try the Crown Chemical
Company again on this toon.

Another thing to look out for once you get to panda mining is

http://www.wowhead.com/item=85777/ancient-pandaren-mining-pick#comments

You may even have it already from other char drops
Not worth camping but nice to put on a miner if you happen to have/get it.
I got mine by accident on the first quest run through, didn't even
realise it was treasure spawn, if it sparkles loot it :-)
maybe it isn't being camped as much.

I like it because the miner can stand around with a pick and a hardhat,
when doing engineering it has a large spanner ,a hammer and welding
goggles. Bored enough to roleplay :-).

Thanks for reminding me, I still don't have that one! I see it's boA
not BoP so I may send one of my stealthers to camp that mine (too much
hassle getting around the place with all those siders without stealth
:-P) - it's a popular one though, I've found almost all possible rare
spawn items like that, but not this one!

It doesn't give much at all, but it does give, and sometimes bountiful
bags procs on it.
At least I think b-b procs, I do seem to get a tiny trickle of decent
gems and sometimes 2 or three extra. Two quite high gems showing up when
you next check the bags is quite nice.
Maybe only 150g-300g an hour, if AH as-is, nice to have as a passive
effect. I tend to farm fairly intensively for that hour.
