They have server farms in korea and taiwan, but that could have changed. Latency should be a lot less than piping it all the way acroos the pacific and back so I doubt it is that. Upgrades only make a difference to out of game epeen, and they are going away anyway. > > Actually while on the matter of latency, when Blizz changed the ingame ... > We'd been playing over one whole second > behind the NZ players. Assuming you packets were via nz, but there are other cables. Some isps also have US pops and channels data goes more or less express rather than switched which can speed things up. http://www.cablemap.info/ From adelaide I get 200-300 regularly now via internode and optus, thats pretty much zero delay apart from physics. But anywhere else with extra stages or add satellite up/down..pretty much impossible to do anything requiring timing by austar and I doubt the new Ka-band satellites would be any better for ping. NBN? nobloodynearer :-) Actually ping isn't so bad, it is variable ping that makes it really hard. Do I lead by ~500ms? nope, missed, was I early or late?? Try again, got it, try again, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss, but an hour ago I could hit every time. I have traced some packets going US-south america first, because Argentina is obviously the shortest route, even if there is no cable across the south pole :-) Some even take off clear across asia, europe,us, I suppose the asia-us link is congested. Though mostly it is adel-melb-syd-guam-us rather than via nz now, that probably depends on isp and their cable tunneling deals.. > My point is, if Asia has latency issues that makes game play difficult then > compensating them with 6 slot pgrades makes sense. Why would it?, they aren't playing against anyone else so it makes no difference if they have none or 100. A little mitigation and dps has little effect on being defeated by mechanics. > but Australian players > with 1 second + latency will never get such help, because they play on > english speaking servers and anyone seeing some aussie player running about > with a 6 slot upgrade is going to scream the house down about how unfair > that it. You shouldn't be at 1 second any more in a major city, change isps. In the country? it will suck, it always sucks, thats why we get a zone tax allowance :-) Blizzard don't want to put a server farm here, we aren't actually entitled to expect much for a $US15 monthly fee and a relatively small user base. just play ah , 48 hour ping to sell :-)
