It's not actually that big a problem.  You charge, gain 20 rage, spend
15 of it on Thunderclap and you're only losing 5 when you then switch
to defensive stance.  And chances are you'll have enough rage to do
something with just from getting beaten on between entering defensive
stance and being able to do something/anything.  Did this all the time
back in the day.  ; )

Though until you can charge in Defensive stance, you'd probably save
this for pulls when you don't have rage left over from the previous
fight.  If you remember to just auto-attack for the last 4 or 5
seconds of the last mob, you should be able to build up a nice reserve
of rage to get you to the next pull.
