You don't need to divide by (x-y):

Given:  x = y; thus (x-y) = 0

1.   2(x-y) = 3(x-y)
2.     2(0) = 3(0)		- substitution
3.        0 = 0			- multiplication by zero

The proof is meaningless, because it does NOT prove that 2 = 3.
