Yes, there is. You might find a copy where used games are sold. Well worth the search. G. I decided to find out for myself so I ordered
the Unreal Gold set.
Can you tell me what this mission pack thing is ??
I get the impression you can get various missions to go along with
this program ???
Where do you find other mission packs ??

The mission pack is another game of UNREAL with different scenarios. You need the original loaded to install it I think. Unreal 1 is the best adventure you could ever go on.....nothing has ever equalled or surpassed it for me but I admit I have only played about 15-20 games! If the game is too dark when you install it goto the unreal.ini file and change NoLighting to TRUE If you get an error in the mission pack that "server is at capacity" goto unreal.ini and change MaxPlayers to 32 from 16. The mission pack is brilliant too....in fact that is ALSO better than U2!!!!! Maybe I have made a mistake here. I intend only to play this game offline. Are you telling me it can only be played online ??? My connection is only 26400 V.34 both ways I can not do any better, which is terrible for gaming online. My favorite games are FPS types single player. And other First Person Single Player type games. It may not have the visual impact it once possessed but the combination of creatures, weapons, objectives, sounds and music, all combine to make it a kickass game even 6 years after it's arrival. Agree. The ambience/music (this must be singled out as magnificent);
the astounding level design (not all of course, but the initial exit from
the prison ship to the planet surface is the most amazing sequence in the
history of gaming -- one review likened it to entering a new era, bringing
gaming into the light -- along with levels such as the first skaarj
encounter, or the darkened mothership level; the funky and unique weapons,
which were ruined in UT (imho).

I disagree about the visual impact. I recall running U1 on a K7-700 +
voodoo3, with the latest patch, at 1280x1024 full detail, and simply being
amazed at the visual quality *with glass-smooth gameplay*. This is hard to
pull off in recent games.
Unreal2 had a similar feel to it, with the superb mirror effects from
U1, and long outdoors vistas. Unfortunately U2 had the same problems of
very few AI opponents, zero environmental interaction, a sparse world with
few npcs.
You feel very much alone in Unreal games, which worked in U1, but falls
short in U2. Sweeney et al need to add someone to the team who will work on
gameplay flow and story, and add richness to the package. The engine is
fine, they need to apply themselves in these other areas.

I wish I could find a new copy of the original Unreal locally. I should have jumped on it when I last saw it about 18 months ago for $15.

Unreal was a tech demo. You can find Unreal Gold anywhere (contains the original Unreal and the expansion.) I played it on my 3dfx voodoo 1 card and I thought that the quality of the graphics were amazing. The spaceship interior is very atmospheric and introduces some of the amazing graphical effects such as fogging and reflection. The textures looked so detailed that one began to wonder if the bilinear filtering of the voodoo was even needed. The bit where you emerge from the ship was very impressive. The ambient music starts playing and you look out over the edge of the cliff. Unreal was the first game of that generation that used scaling so that you could have large outdoor areas (perversely, earlier generations of game had already accomplished this). You could see birds flying about in the distance. The scale of that area was quite breathtaking. IMO, it all went to hell after that. A few nice weapons, the odd good bit and some nice graphical effects. After a couple of levels I realised that I had been duped yet again and that I was playing another suped-up DooM clone with better graphics :-) -- ***Please remove the word 'not' from my email address to reply.

Agree with most of you. Unreal 2 was boring compared to the original because it was missing some key features. Large outdoor areas that made Unreal so "unreal". Built in co-op net play. A very long set of missions that took a while to play. New games are too short. The Nali universe "characters, story and places". So far nothing has gotten close to the original imersion, value and "wow factor" that U1 gave us. Maybe HL2 might do it. Who knows.

I played Unreal right after getting a voodoo card, and while the game had it's athmospheric bits, itmost of the levels were boring. The weapons also felt weak to me- getting a new/bigger gun didn't really mean it became much easier to kill your enemies. If you're not a fan of blowing things up with one blast that might be a good thing though.
