I loved the first couple of levels of Unreal. I played it on my 3dfx
voodoo 1 card and I thought that the quality of the graphics were
amazing. The spaceship interior is very atmospheric and introduces some
of the amazing graphical effects such as fogging and reflection. The
textures looked so detailed that one began to wonder if the bilinear
filtering of the voodoo was even needed.

The bit where you emerge from the ship was very impressive. The ambient
music starts playing and you look out over the edge of the cliff. Unreal
was the first game of that generation that used scaling so that you
could have large outdoor areas (perversely, earlier generations of game
had already accomplished this). You could see birds flying about in the
distance. The scale of that area was quite breathtaking.

IMO, it all went to hell after that. A few nice weapons, the odd good
bit and some nice graphical effects. After a couple of levels I realised
that I had been duped yet again and that I was playing another suped-up
DooM clone with better graphics :-)
