Heard it all before.. My nephew, "Im gonna get the xbox, and not have to worry about upgrading...". Now he has both, couldnt stand the gameplay on ut2003 and a handful of other fps. Go ahead, buy it. You'll eventually be upgrading your pc if you take your killing serious. ;-) ~Coyote "Wesley" <@.com> wrote in message news:dziwa.5204$DP4.60626@news-server.bigpond.net.au... > I spend so much money upgrade on my PC computers for trying best performance > but still struggle with slow FPS like in Uneal II...........DOOM III seem > end of my road with PC. > > DOOM III make me want to buy X-BOX DEFINITLEY!!! > > I'm afraid to say so called ALL console like...X-BOX, GAMECUBE, PS2 ARE TAKE > OVER THE PC COMPUTER FOR FUN GAMES!!! > > NO QUESTION ABOUT THAT. > > PC COMPUTER IS NICE FOR WORK, NETWORK, SOME RPG, SLOW GAMES, MULTIPLAYER > GAMES...THOUGH.

Probably something I should've done myself instead of buying the utterly, UTTERLY worthless SB128 and SB Live!. Here's a hint: Dump the souped-up GF2. I haven't touched one since I had a Sega Genesis, can online console gaming be made secure from cheats (for some reason I could see this as another big selling point), I'd think it would be somewhat easier than on a PC. It seems less likely one could get some cheesy bot code executing in the background on a console, though I don't doubt there's a way to do it. -- "It is an easy thing, for men to be deceived, by the specious name of Libertie." If someone did anage to work a cheat into the console game then it would spell disaster for the game especially if it were as net-orientated as Q3.I guess all the anti-cheatig measures would have to be done server-side, or else loaded into the clients via disk once the game was loaded.

The $695 does not include the monitor, keyboard and mouse, in my case I chose to buy new perphirals (17" monitor $169, keyboard and mouse under $50 total) but in most cases people can buy a new box on the cheap and keep their old stuff. I would suggest it might be a good idea for people to stop crying about the whole doom3 will make them upgrade their computer issue, it's the same thing that's been happening for years, people have been forced to get new boxes/equipment for new games for years, I think it would be safe to say that since 1995 at a conservative estimate their has been a game at least every 2 years which has required people to upgrade for them to be able to run it. As a comparison have a look at what a console from the same time looks like and see just how far behind current PC technology it looks and performs, in 5 or so years that will be you and your fantastic plastic xbox, you get what you pay for, and in the case of the xbox you pay for a low spec, non-upgradable PC in a crappy plastic box. -sTiVen http://www.planetquake.com/sgquake

If you don't have access to the file system inside the console and utilities that would allow you to add and customize the files, all that being online would enable is you being able to play other people who have exactly the same game. AFAIK the console makers really don't like people modding there games right now. If you're talking about a console that has the ability to do all that plus possibly compile code, maybe run a 3d modeling program or photoshop.... oh wait a second that would start to be a PC wouldn't it. -- "This is a public service announcement... with Guitar!" The reason for this is that the only thing a console has over a PC from their point of view is that it is a closed environment, they know the exact hardware that will be available and the exact software that will be loaded. -sTiVen http://www.planetquake.com/sgquake

Just do what I do - stay far enough behind the times that every game you buy runs on your system like an absolute dream... Example: by the time Halo comes out for the PC on the budget range, I'll have a machine which'll run it as easily as my current machine runs Tetris. Plus, buying a game when it's been out that long means you can pretty well guarantee being able to get all the patches and mods you could ever need for it. Now excuse me while I go back to my game of The Incredible Machine :-) Andy OK - so I exaggerate a little. My machine can run a lot of the really modern games - but Unreal II, for example, would kill it. But there's a lot of older games out there, cheap and plentiful, which I haven't played, and which are absolute classics. Why go for the latest and greatest, if you can have just as much fun on something older & tried'n'tested?

This is a very good and sound approach. There are almost only advantages to this "tactic". Other advantages other than those you mention is that when you buy the games, you often get a stable, fixed version, and not version 1.0 which always hits the shelves too early (rushed for the holidays and what not) and therefore is buggy and messy. These bugs are then later fixed, and the people who bought the game early are forced to upgrade several times over the net. Whereas you pick up a clean, stable version 1.21 (or whatever) 1½ years later for $9.99... ;-D And it's not like you just sit around and *wait* for that time to go buy, because you're quite busy playing titles now that were released some time ago. :-) I've also seen games and their major add-ons/mods being thrown into one package for a low-low price (Take Half-life,CS and Blue Shift in one pack, for example, for roughly $15!). Kick-ass. The only downside, as I see it, is that the online communities might have "moved on" by the time you start playing the game. OTOH, there are still a lot of people who play for example DooM and Quake online, so that risk is perhaps slim, other than for non-quality titles? You at least get to play very devoted (read "fanatic") people! :-D My $0.02, -- Kristian Ronge |zuc...@bigfoot.com|d99...@nada.kth.se d99, Computer Science, Royal Institute of Technology "One short sleep past, we wake eternally, and Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die." -- John Donne

I played Unreal II from start to finish on an XP1900+ with a GF3Ti200. I did turn details down somewhat to maintain reasonable framerates on some levels with lots of reflections etc going on, but apart from that it played decent enough. The details I removed didn't change anything that I could see, while I got the framerate I needed, so it was fair. Having said that, I don't think I would've recommended anything less than my machine. As a min spec, yes, but my machine would definitely be the lowest spec I would say label "recommended". When I think of a recommended spec I consider that to be the lowest spec machine you can play with decent framerates and graphics at least halfway up the "lookin' pretty" scales. I sorta miss a third spec on game boxes: "Perfect". A "perfect" spec machine should play consistently at 30+ FPS with all details maxed out at 1280x1024. - -- Frode -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP 8.0.2 iQA/AwUBPtO3OOXlGBWTt1afEQImfACgsq/VpMNURxlrZdGngQRqrWEiyaEAoLCn rD/IZvT3oriJCzVlUHpwgs7u =0HDK -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

different ideas people have different ideas
I'd class that as normal performance (resolution that I require), however I
couldn't stand 30fps, way too low
As for my version of perfect I'd say :
1600x1200 6xFSAA, 16-tap Ansitropic filtering, 120+fps

The "recommended" specs they give often means little more than "able to run game at some resolution or another with details at 50%". > As for my version of perfect I'd say : > 1600x1200 6xFSAA, 16-tap Ansitropic filtering, 120+fps You gotto have the fastest eyes in the west :P - -- Frode -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGP 8.0.2 iQA/AwUBPtT/OOXlGBWTt1afEQLbugCg/gXSsP2alMxDzJjUb8ycpWbc1M8AnA3H w5eKgml2D8CMRbAGTdhRlPYm =DJ0k -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
