returning to play after 8 years...

Hey everyone!
I have recently installed Linux and since UT99 runs just fine natively
on my box, I decided to play some again.
Now I have 2 major problems:
a) I used to be a mid-level skilled player, at least good enough to be
able to judge whether someone was playing fair or using an aimbot at
most times
Now I am kind of frustrated at how fast I eat a headshot or direct
killing hit, and since I have been so out of touch with the game I
rather quit the server than suspect anyone of aimbotting. So my question
related to this is: How far spread is the use of aimbots on UT99 servers
nowadays and if it is a bad problem, is there any server list out there
of servers that have the better anti-aimbot mods active?
b) I have seen some interesting and challenging "new" mods, such as Dr.
Strangelove (though that's sort of driving me crazy after 5 minutes of
screaming), Bunnytrack (though many maps are insanely hard, there seems
to be hardly anything for "beginners" to train on with less frustration)
and mainly Jailbreak(!). I really enjoyed Jailbreak when I saw it, but
sadly it seems to be the least wide spread. So does anyone know some
good jailbreak servers? And would you share them?
Then apart from these two problems I have some minor ones, such as:
- what do people enjoy in stuff like Monsterhunt? I mean - In UT2003 and
higher it was kinda fun, but then the waves were sort of... well - you
could count the mobs in your field of view most of the time, you only
had one live (and could save the round and get everyone back to live)
and the waves were doable with a normal life. But the UT99 version seems
to be nearly infinite health & ammo and about as many monsters, where
it's just lame spamming of ammo into them... Zero skills at all...
- why did someone try to "improve" such a perfect game mod as instagib?
that combo-shot addition to instagib is about the lamest stuff ever.
Either I want precision gibs, then I play instagib, or I want blast
radius, then I play rocket arena. Labeling that other mod with
"Instagib" just sucks
- what gayness rode some asses to NOT label their servers as passworded
for the server selection, and then demand a password *AFTER* you have
downloaded all the mods and maps they are currently using and then
connected to the server only to be kicked again? That is not only sheer
gayness, it is also dumb as shit, since the downloads of people that
can't join will slow the server down or at least waste bandwidth
somewhere. Plus it pisses people off...
Some changes for the better, some for the worse, as is normal over
time... Comments welcome! Oh - and I don't really mind people playing
monsterhunt, it just seems so... boring...
Yo!
Lars

And, the cheat community is much smaller than the UT community. Don't assume any cheating is happening, but try to stick to actively adminned servers and you won't have to worry about it much. I don't know your geographical location, but check out the multiplay.co.uk servers. The admins there are well known and very good at what they do. Past that, most clan servers are actively adminned. You'll just have to look around and find active servers and then chat a bit to find out who the admins are. > > - what do people enjoy in stuff like Monsterhunt? I don't know what the psychology is behind what makes different people enjoy different types of gameplay. Personally, I more or less stick to straight DM, but most of the people I play with/against also seem to like CTF or TDM. Why? You'll probably have to see if there is some sort of a psych study about things like that at maybe one of the major universities. > - why did someone try to "improve" such a perfect game mod as instagib? > that combo-shot addition to instagib is about the lamest stuff ever. Again, No one can tell you why other people think or feel differently than you do. You can delve into psych books, I suppose. I have to say that I always hated insta because it doesn't require as much precision. Hit another player anywhere in the hit box and they explode... With a sniper rifle, you have to be quite precise in the hit box to make a one shot kill. With something like the pulse, you have to stay in the hit box for more than one short click, so you need to aim in the opponents hitbox for a longer period of time while they try to 1) not allow you to kill them, and 2) attempt to kill you. - etc etc etc. Why you see insta differently than I do is a mystery but also very cool in the fact that people act and feel differently from each other about everything. > > - what gayness rode some asses to NOT label their servers as passworded > for the server selection, and then demand a password *AFTER* you have > downloaded all the mods and maps they are currently using and then > connected to the server only to be kicked again? I guess if I was looking for servers to play, that might annoy me too. I never noticed that server join redirects happened before a passworded server required credentials for join. - Anyway, in a few weeks, you'll probably have a few servers saved to favorites and it won't matter any more. > Some changes for the better, some for the worse, as is normal over > time... Thanks for the feedback, I am in the Cologne area / Germany - And I
mostly try to find nice servers by ping - though it doesn't seem to be
very stable anymore when I join any of the servers that show up as < 30ms...

Yayaya I get it :p

Ya the favouriting already started and it definitely helps.

I indeed still enjoy it more than I did UT2003 and 2k4 - but I
definitely need to have a look at Unreal Tournament 3 still...

Dude, you put "Comments welcome" in your post. You listed five paragraphs of things you dislike and one must search your post for a positive comment on something. All I'm saying is it doesn't bode well for your entertainment value. I can appreciate opinion but you come off as unhappy right out of the gate. I don't think it will be much fun for you with your attitude towards how the community sits. Headshot? My God you have been gone a while. That was mildly funny when you first played. Now.... not so much. Oh, and monsterhunt rules :P

Ding me and I'll send you the access info. BTW, I made a no-telefragging trans that works well on MH servers if your admin dislikes them. It simply won't trans you if there is a monster nearby. www.gopostals.com has some of my work. You are welcome to any of it.

And to add my .02, I agree with Six that DM/TDM/CTF in their pristine form are still the best way to enjoy UT. IMHO, comparing the original gametypes to the heavily-modded gametypes is like comparing a six foot breaking putt at the Open championship to hitting the ball between windmill blades at your local putt-putt. *headshot* :)

Any of you guys are welcome. Drop me an email and I'll ship you the IP and password. I just try to keep out the public riff-raff. I dont mind people playing, even logging in and summoning things. I run a completely custom suite of stuff and I like to see the logs from people playing, not trying to fuck over the server (which happened yesterday, that group is history now though). I'm not an elitist by any means, and you guys are welcome to play around on the server pretty much as you like. I just ask that you don't use any "set" commands or try to trash the place. If you see anyone playing they are certified "cool" by me so it will always be a good group if someone is on. One thing if you guys hop on, my main player is named Scify and she has dyslexia. Her chat is often hard to read and it takes her a while to type it out so give her time. I do run a teamspeak server dedicated for this so let me know if you want that too and I'll send you that info. You'll find Scify and the others are a lot of fun to talk to.

There's a lot of botters around. I run the Multiplay cluster and we're banning around 40-50 unique identified cheaters a day. Of those, perhaps 3-5 a day are new to us. Anth is about the anti anti-cheat author still working. Naturally, any admins that aren't spending a lot of time checking manually will have more botters. Don't generally like to advertise, but myself and the other admins here take pride in being able to accurately identify and more importantly - keep out identified cheaters. http://unreal.multiplay.co.uk/servers > b) I have seen some interesting and challenging "new" mods, such as Dr. > Strangelove (though that's sort of driving me crazy after 5 minutes of > screaming), Bunnytrack (though many maps are insanely hard, there seems > to be hardly anything for "beginners" to train on with less frustration) > and mainly Jailbreak(!). Again, taste. Insta was dying across the board. Insta-combo adds a significantly different style of play and our combo-ctf server gets a lot of players regularly. (Alas, our combo-dm seems to have lost its inertia recently) I think combo's appeal is that a really good player is less untouchable to the lower skilled players. The extra spam factor levels the field somewhat. > - what gayness rode some asses to NOT label their servers as passworded > for the server selection, and then demand a password *AFTER* you have > downloaded all the mods and maps they are currently using and then > connected to the server only to be kicked again? Details are here: http://utsurvival.com/ and we have a release date of the 16th. Been working pretty hard on this and im quite proud of it. It's a very simple, solid, cofigurable game with a bunch of native mutators but very balanced. Great mindless fun with little to "figure out". Yell at me Flash and I'll let you access the testing server we are using. Also is it cool if I post about it at Multi? This is mainly created for server admins and not so much as an offline game.
