Here's something interesting

I came across a company that offers older games for sale and low and
behold they're offering UTGOTY.
http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/unreal_tournament_goty

They claim they have it patched to 436 and is compatible with XP and
Vista. What I'm wondering though is if they have addressed any of the
issues that plague UT99 on newer hardware such as gamespeed. Any
thoughts?

Certain problems can't be fixed externally. When UT installs its engine it
polls the processor for its running speed and builds all its timing in
relation to that figure. If you have speed stepping or power saving on and
your cpu speed is throttled in any way, you will experience the lag and
stutter. Without source access to the engine, you can't fix that (and I'm
not sure it could be anyway). The only recourse it to adjust how your
computer deals with the UT engine, or how it behaves itself. If they did fix
it to run right, I'm guessing they altered the exe to compensate for certain
things, but in doing that you might not be able to access a lot of the
anticheat protected servers that run an md5 check.

Still I am interested, and probably will order one to see.

They have support available, but you apparently can't access it unless you
have purchased a game.

I probably would order it too, but I'm still bummed out about how UT sucks
on my LCD monitor. Maybe if I get that sorted out...

I wish I could see what you are seeing. I'm running UT at 60 fps on my 22"
LCD and it's smooth.

If we dug through old posts, we could find a lot of people talking about
getting 27 to 32 fps with UTBench on 1 to 1.6Ghz CPUs with a gig of ram and
something like a geforce 3 Ti or a geforce 4 Ti. - With my quad core at
3.2, and on my LCD, in game, I get 60... UTBench is 60... everything is 60.
There are no slow downs in heavy action.. no slowdowns where textures used
to mess me up (like the snow outside the window in Zeto).. there are just no
slowdowns at all.

I had a gamespeed issue for a little while because Windows didn't understand
I was running a lower-than-stock multiplier to acheive my overclock (so
windows thought I was running at 3.6ghz instead of 3.2). I changed my OC
and now there is no gamespeed issue and UT is smooth as butter even Vsync'd
to 60 fps.

I'd be happy to zip up any ut system files you think might be your culprit
and email them to you or post them in the binary group.

Yeah, we have a pretty large variety playing in my server group and no one
has issues that couldn't be resolved. I play on an LCD at 1440X900 and I'm
very happy with it. I do like CRT better, but the added space on my desk is
worth the swap. One thing worth mentioning about Six's post is that even
with a quad cpu UT will only use one core no matter what so gauge your
performance with that in mind.

BTW six, thanks for the walk down memory lane. I remember bringing my 4200ti
home and thinking "I can't wait to play!"

Well, I don't think it's a performance issue since swapping my LCD out for
a CRT fixes everything.

I don't quite recall what hardware I was using when I quit playing UT99,
but I do know that my framerates were locked at 100fps which was the
refresh rate of my CRT.

It could very well be that my LCD just isn't up to snuff. It's a Dell
1905FP circa Jan of '05. It was hot stuff back then, but it's a PVA panel
and it's response time would probably be considered very slow by today's
standards. Maybe it's time for an upgrade.

One question though... I thought that turning off vsync might help, but
that caused UT to run *way* too fast... just like it did before putting
the CPU speed in the shortcut. Does yours do that too? If not, then
maybe I do need a bit of tweaking. I'm currently running Chris Donal's
(http://www.cwdohnal.com/utglr/) OGL renderer. I've tried D3D too but no
joy. And oh by the way... back in the day Chris's renderer made the game
look really good. Now, there are various texture issues during gameplay.
Maybe my config is crap.

I thought I'd spoken to you via email at that account... It bounces now.

I'm sure we've communicated via email in past times... should I have
something different for you in my address book?

No, thats a valid email. I use it every day. I think I've had that thing now
for 20 years :D

If that still wont work, you can use gopostal@ultimatemonsterhunt.com or
swing by the site www.ultimatemonsterhunt.com . I'm sorry for the trouble!
