Just curious as to your guys opinion on something that happened yesterday. I was playing on (I think) Nachoes and Beer assault server. My team was behind about 12-3 and we were getting pwned big time. One of the opposers took a ion tank and kept blasting our spawn room and racking up serious frags. I simply asked if he would stop spawn killing as they were already way ahead and we were obviously going to lose. An admin told me that spawn killing was allowed and there was a two second protection (there wasn't). I told him that we were dying as fast as we could spawn. He seemed indifferent, which is fine because it's not my server, but I tried appealing to the sportsmanship aspect of the other team which he took offense to. Anyhow things went sour and I may be banned. Was I OK with getting miffed or should I just have left and went to another server? It just kills me to see rules enforced with an iron fist but good sportsmanship left by the wayside.

They obviously play by a set of rules (or lack thereof) that you're not interested in (and neither would I by the sounds of it). If you told them the 2-second spawn protection wasn't working, and they didn't care, then there's really no reason to play, as they aren't looking for a challenge, they're looking for self-gratification. If you are banned, it doesn't sound like you'll be missing much. Some people have no real idea of sportsmanship, makes for a boring game IMO.

Games are made to be enjoyed. Obviously not this case. So what if you got banned from one server, one whose rules you don't agree with. Are you even considering reconnecting ? I usually play the same server, with the same people. That's why I joined a clan, getting involved makes it interesting. But the question is, will that server be there a year from now ? I've seen a lot of them come and go. A lot of the gonners, are the ones with no sportmanship, who wants to keep loosing/fragged ? My two cents Noxx

Walk away mate If enough do there will be no one left to pawn and the server will slowly die. I agree with Noxx you just have to find a server with players that think as you do. Thanks for the opinions. I guess it just caught me the wrong way. I don't
mind getting beaten but it just seems uncool for tagged clan players to be
acting like that. Being a good sport makes a good game. I've even let an
obviously new player score on me just so I could congratulate them on doing
a good job. I even try to say something positive after each match about
someone (or some team) doing well. I figure good will does a lot more to
retain players than getting killed as soon as you spawn.
{My best Homer Simpson voiceover}: MMMmmmmm.....Crysis......
BTW, you guys been following the mediadefender story? Wow, talk about being
pwned.

Even if there *were* a two second spawn protection, what are you supposed to do in that two seconds to prevent being blown away by a spawn killing tank?

It's not just games, sportsmanship is becoming a thing of the past. I
blame end-zone dances and wrestling. There's a whole generation who
thinks "in your face" and "trash talk" are more important than manners.
You're just one of the few who remember a well behaved world. But then
again, who was it, Plato that spent a lot of time lamenting the decline
of youth? A sure sign of getting old.

I have run into games with spawnkillers and/or clans on open servers insisting that even with 8 people on the server they would stick to the one side since they were a clan. Sometimes asking for some fairness for the greater good works but often it does not. This kind of thing has ruined some games for me. Like for example I had some fun playing Strike Force (a UT mod kindda like Counter Strike only more realistic) but eventually gave up since the number of players was small and most games got ruined by unsportsmanlike gamers. Somewhat alarming it's my experience that the ratio of sportsmanships goes down when games are played on consoles and especially if there are some global rankings involved. This makes me worry about UT3 as I have heard rumors of consoles players and PC players being able to play on the same servers! Kind regards Bruno

You are so right (and you too Vis from on down). It's all about personal
gain over group. We idolize people who present the worst possible examples.
I probably should have not wasted y'alls time with the original post but it
just really pissed me off and I wanted to vent. *-note to self: buy a small
dog to kick*
(kidding! I love dogs. I'm a mailman.)
To end on a positive note, this afternoon I played another assault server
where a guy came on just spewing curse words. He was asked to stop, you know
he just can't, no admin was around and the coolest thing happened: One guy
just stood still and said he'd wait. Then another and finally everyone was
just standing until this guy left. Once he left, the game picked right back
up but stopped twice more when he came back. Guess there is good and bad
everywhere.
BTW DeadMan, is that you I see from time to time on the AS servers? There's
a guy tagged with your name but no second capital letter.

Back when competition was face-to-face athletics directed by a mature coach, the athletes knew they would most certainly see their competitor again in a future event and good sportsmanship was typically the norm. Though I can recall some minor unsportsmanlike behavior while participating in high school athletics, this was an unusual event, and I recall making many good friends on opposing teams. Further, back then, coaches were less influenced by parents and a misbehaving athletes would be punished by sitting the bench. Today, in addition to the idiot pro athletes whose behavior is the worst of examples, too many of the youth athletic coaches (and parents) have adopted the "in your face" approach to competition, a terribly unfortunate development imho. In addition, the internet, and its built-in anonymity, seems to promote "assholeism" so often seen in competitive arenas. My approach is simply go find another server to play on since trying to educate today's youths about things such as good sportsmanship seems to fall on deaf ears. Hmmmm, do ya suppose our parents said the same things? (lol). I do note that in-game voice capability seems to add more "friendliness" or "humanism" to the game, particularly in Counterstrike (Source) since one typically has a spell of idle time during online play in which voice comments are quite common. -- Best regards, Kyle (now in the over 50 gaming crowd)

Another layer that seems to add to poor sportsmanship is the growing cost of higher education, thus the necessity for scholarships and such. It seems many schools, especially in less-fortunate areas, seem to striving for attention, sportsmanship be dammed. It's not just a matter of winning, but on top of a win, they try for "the big hit" for the highlight reel. Weather it be a smashing tackle, a grand slam home run, a vicious runner-catcher collision at home plate, a hard drive through the lane, as long as it gets attention of people, it has the chance of getting the attention of someone looking to hand out a scholarship. It doesn't help that so much of television promotes, as you aptly put it , "assholeism". I can't think of a single "reality" television show that doesn't feed into it. As much as I like dirt-biking and such, I can't watch even a few minutes of the "Crustys Dirt Demons" because they are just such assholes to each other. People try and justify it by calling them "competitive", but that's not it, the personalities I see are identical to those of the inmates that I see at the prison I work at. what a bunch of douchebags.
