Another layer that seems to add to poor sportsmanship is the growing cost of higher education, thus the necessity for scholarships and such. It seems many schools, especially in less-fortunate areas, seem to striving for attention, sportsmanship be dammed. It's not just a matter of winning, but on top of a win, they try for "the big hit" for the highlight reel. Weather it be a smashing tackle, a grand slam home run, a vicious runner-catcher collision at home plate, a hard drive through the lane, as long as it gets attention of people, it has the chance of getting the attention of someone looking to hand out a scholarship. It doesn't help that so much of television promotes, as you aptly put it , "assholeism". I can't think of a single "reality" television show that doesn't feed into it. As much as I like dirt-biking and such, I can't watch even a few minutes of the "Crustys Dirt Demons" because they are just such assholes to each other. People try and justify it by calling them "competitive", but that's not it, the personalities I see are identical to those of the inmates that I see at the prison I work at. what a bunch of douchebags.
