Hi,
I have to buy a first person shooter in the next couple of days for my
nephew's birthday.
I had Quake 3 arena a while back, it was great.

I just wanted to ask - is Quake 4 worth buying?
Also, if not quake 4, does anyone have any opinion about the best first
person shooter you can buy nowadays?

Thanks if you can help

Personally, I was greatly dissapointed with Q4.
Unfortunately, there aint much else out there that holds a candle to Q3. You
might try something like battlefield, at least it's pretty popular.

I've been playing with Q4 for around two months, and haven't had enough time
to really bang on it, but I like it so far - mind you, still playing with
the single player mode - with the exception that on occasion [a] it's
semi-predictable enemy-pattern-of-behavior wise (well, especially if you've
saved and replayed until getting it right), and [b] it's very dark visually
at times, almost reminding me of Alien vs. Predator (though that one was too
predictable, even in first-time running).

Good old Q3A will be on my machine for some time, though. I also play Star
Wars Jedi Outcast/Academy/Galaxies (though I spit at the idea of having to
bleeding pay for it after one has already paid for it, and if there were
more features in Galaxies that made it worth paying for, well... there
aren't).

Note that Q4 will require a fast modern system to run it on an enjoyable
level - grphx card/ram/cpu - not sure what the min specs on the box are
tho -

Graphics-wise, Q4, is based on Doom3, if you've played that you can get an
idea. As far as the storyline & gameplay are concerned, Q4 is more like Q2,
where you're battling space aliens and not fighting in an arena, and it is
not-at-all like Q3. But if you're into multiplayer on the internet, I
couldn't tell you because I haven't tried it, but from what I saw in the
demos, deathmatch in Q4 looks alot like Q3.

Now that the price has come down, I would say it is definitely worth the
money. But, if your computer isn't fast enough to handle it (try
downloading the demo, or the demo for D3 to see), it might not be worth it.

I have an Athlon FX55 (2.6GHz) with 1Gig RAM & dual BFG GeForce 7600GT
graphics cards at 1280x1024 and I can run a Q4 timedemo at over 60fps
(85fps), so the performance for me is good. My last computer was an Athlon
2500+ (1.8Gig) with a GeForce 6800, and it probably would have played OK,
but would not have been enjoyable. I remember trying Doom3 on that computer
and it was horrible.

I just finished Call of Duty 2 and would recommend that as a great game,
based on WWII. And you can never go wrong with Half-Life. Steam has a
great deal where you can buy all current & previous Half-Life &
HL/Valve-related games for US $80. That includes HL 1 & 2, plus, the new
Episode 1 as well as all Counter-Strike Source games and any/all expansion
packs made up until now. If you have hi-speed internet, would be worth it,
in my opinion.

I concur on the speed-of-PC issue. My previous system was Sempron 1.9GHz,
256MB RAM, GeCube Radeon 9550 256MB w/80GB IDE drive, and Q4 ran so
wretchedly on it I just waited until making the new PCs for us (Athlon 64
2.5GHz, 2GB RAM, Sapphire Radeon X800 GTO Fireblade 256MB w/250GB ATA300
drive). Runs just fine now, and since the total outlay for such a rig is
more than reasonable these days... :)

I have been playing a lot of COD2 lately and there are over 7000 servers for
it.
Lots of fun. It too like the current games are hard on cpu/gpu.

Well you could always play the most popular online game ever as opposed to
the best or even a fun game. That would be counter strike and it's the most
popular by far. Not the best and not all that fun but hey, it must have
something going for it.

1) Battlefield2 give me lot of fun.
2) Half Life 2 / Counter Strike

Quake 3 is an arena type game. Quake 4 is a quest type game. That
means that Quest 4 is very limited in its playing experience since you
can't skip around from map to map, play teams, play capture the flag,
play tournaments, etc. Also, in online play Quake 4 seems to have gone
backward in visual quality, employing team skins that are not user
choosable and which are too similar in color. Quake 4, in my opinion,
suffters from trying too much to be like Half-Life.

There is one other game I have found that rivals Quake 3 in all its
unique and fun elements: Unreal Tournament 2004. If your nephew liked
Quake 3, I think he'll like this one also.

Quake 4 is great but with a small community...
I like this game , i play with the mod : rocket arena
It's amazing , maybe a bit slower than quake 3 but you need to learn much
tricks like slide.

Thanks for all your responses. I ended up getting quake 4, but I have
to say, I don't think it's anything like as fun as quake 3, and
ridiculously dark and depressing.
I seem to have lost my copy of quake 3, but considering getting
another to give the same nephew in compensation for my questionable
choice : )

quake 3 has a sort of simplicity and fun graphical and articstic
quality, and a pace and excitement that I like. quake 4 is gloomy and
tedious by comparison, at least that is my initial impression.

Give quake 2 a try. In some ways it's as good as, or better than quake 3.
