Hey all! I'm looking to get myself an LCD monitor, at least 19", as well as a new vidcard that supports DVI (prolly some BFG NVidia). Are there any LCDs that are better than others when it comes to games like Quake, CS, etc.? What particular specs should I be looking for? (such as: pitch, contrast ratio, resp. time, etc.)

I have a pair of Samsung Syncmaster 930B monitors running on this rig right now. They are both on the DVI ports of one of my 2 7800GTX's. One is six months older than the other. The picture is slightly different between them. What I saw and wanted when I got one: High contrast and bright level. There are better ones today for the same money. Look for the depth of blackness, that is important too. Look for it being 8 bits per pixel rather than 6 as these are. That really shows up in the smoothness of dark areas. Speed, 16 ms response time or less, for gaming and movie watching. slower response times give you ghosting or motion blur. there are a LOT of good ones to choose from, in many brands. And for a gamer, look for the higher resolution. Greater than 1280x1024. Enjoy hunting! McG.

That's one thing on my Sony LCD, playing a dark game like Doom 3, sometimes it looked a little off. There's wasn't a real dark black, the absence of color was more a deep gray. How you enjoying Oblivion McG? I could never get into Morrowind, but I spent close to 4 hours making my way to Kvatch today. -- Cthulhu for President in 2008. Why vote for a lesser evil? I have a Samsung 204b(20") which has a 5 ms response time. Plus it's native resolution is 1600x1200. My daughter has a 930b but the 204 has a far better picture. Why vote for a lesser evil? > > Steve ¤ťIngloŤ¤ > www.inglostadt.com It's a beautiful game. There is a lot to do in it without ever touching a quest. They're not really my interest, exploring the world is. I haven't made it very far anywhere really, I've found a couple caverns close to the Imperial City and between crashes....play in those. The AI of the NPC's is quite interesting I think. I'll work on talking to bandits rather than fight and see what happens. Frequent CTD's, that is the thing I don't like about Oblivion. I'm still playing with my settings. It plays very smooth in 1280x1024 with everything on and cranked up in SLI. Perhaps I need to change drivers. One second I'm playing and the next I'm looking at the desktop. Happy Easter Steve! McG.

I don't know if you can get the bandits to talk, maybe if you have your weapon sheathed. Have you got your horse yet? That's something you get following the main storyline, makes things easier. I got a little sidetracked from playing and have now just crossed my first Oblivion gate. How about Tomb Raider Legend? I've never been much of a fan of the series (I know you are) but the demo got me to go buy the full version. It's a nice looking game, the "next generation" content is too much for my "last generation" system unfortunately, though you should be able to handle it. Without that stuff on the game still looks and plays fantastic. Have you pre-purchased Sin Episodes on Steam yet? I just played through SiN 1 (which you get with the SE: Emergence pre-order) a couple of times, what a fun game, I can't wait for the Emergence release. as Easter and spring can't get here soon enough. We've been having rain practically every day since the beginning of March, I feel like I live in Seattle rather than Oakland. Supposed to finally have clear skies on Monday. -- Cthulhu for President in 2008. Why vote for a lesser evil? Steve ¤»Inglo«¤ www.inglostadt.com

Why vote for a lesser evil? > > Steve ¤ťIngloŤ¤ > www.inglostadt.com You mean they *GIVE* you the first SiN game but in Source? At like $20 that by itself should be worth it. I haven't bought it yet. Your 6800 should be able to handle Legends pretty well. I'm playing it in non-SLI right now. 1280x1024 isn't high enough to bog the 7800Gtx down much. NextGen content is higher res textures, better detail. There are the better SM3 particle effects like mist, smoke, dust, lighting etc. Makes for some gorgeous scenes in places. I'm trying out FRAPS with it. seems to work well and fr's average in 50's and 60's, lowest is 21 and highest is 112. Would have smoother transitions if in SLI I think. I think that even without nextgen stuff, it's a good looking game. deffo made for the general casual console gamer. I prefer the type of game-play we had with the first 4 tr's, but this is playable. It's a pleasant diversion. I do like the gorgeous scenery I've found in places. I'm actually trying to get a Pelican XBox360 gamepad going to try out with this game. Gotta get the drivers going first though. CTD's, might not be from the vid cards, but the x2 CPU possibly, or also from memory leaks. It's not oc'd either, nothing on this rig is. CPU runs cool, vid cards are cool-ER with the new large sidefan. Idle they run 43C, under load, 68-72C. CPU stays around 36-38C until continually loaded, then it's maxed at 46C so far. Oblivion is a cool game to explore. No horse of my own yet, I haven't gotten very far from Imperial City. :) I have seen a couple horses and riders. This game does benefit from SLI and dual core. They're getting there man, it's almost like being there. Some of the textures in the caves/dungeons are very realistic looking. One of the better games this year. What else is due out that looks ultra realistic? McG.
