Locating Quake3 servers with Superscan port scanner?

Hello.

I am trying to use the Superscan port scanner to locate
Quake3 servers on my ISP's netblock (I'm hoping for
some low-ping servers to play on.)

I have tested Superscan with several known working
Quake3 servers. Some of them provide a host response,
others do not. I have tried various probe text strings:

255255255255getchallenge\n
255255getchallenge\n
255getchallenge\n

and so on.

The servers that respond don't even care whether
there is a probe text string. The servers that don't
respond don't care what string I provide. They ignore
my port probe.

Has anyone here been able to use Superscan to
successfully locate Quake3 servers?

Thanks
-Mark

I think most people use the in-game server browser, or GameSpy, or
All-Seeing Eye and sort by lowest ping. No need to use Superscan.
