We're going to buy a new PC very soon so that we can network it with my
current one. My current one got hit by me a few weeks ago, however, and set
us back about 700 dollars in upgrades and repairs. This leads me to my
following questions:

What kind of computer should I get (cheap) that could run Quake 3 incredibly
well?
My current computer, a:
 Pentium 166 mhz
 48 MB RAM
 50x CD-ROM
 8.6 GB
 Hercules Stingray 3D/2D/TV 8 MB 3dfx card
should be upgraded to what?

Also, could I get prices on all the items, including the 3dfx card(s)? Don't
forget to include network card costs, monitor costs, and the 10-base-t cable
prices. I also need to know where to get these items at those prices. :)

Asking a lot,

Don't know prices offhand, but if you want a gaming cpu, get at least a
400mhz (I'd go pentium, though many will say amd), 128mb ram, a 20x cd
player (do you really need a 50x?!), a 6gb hd, and probably a regular video
card and a separate 3d. Voodoo 3 or one of the new non 3dfx cards coming
out.
Here's some advice, don't buy it from a company such as compaq or dell. You
could do much better (probably) to find someone who builds cpu's out of his
own shop (or bedroom) than you could buying from a money hungry corporation.
I got a killer cpu for about $800 (without a 3d card) and I even screwed it
up when I had first bought it, and he fixed it for me free!
PS. try listing your price range

My price range for a new computer and monitor is basically as close to under
1,000 dollars as I can get.

As for the no 3dfx thing, why would I not want 3dfx?

And my 50x CD-ROM drive was about 80 dollars, so that's why we got it. :)

With the prices of computers falling, you could get a kick ass setup for
$1000. Shop around. Try egghead, xoom, where ever you can get the best
deal.

As far as 3dfx, I don't know why you wouldn't want one. It's just that so
many people have been dissing voodoo2 and v3 and how it's not based on some
kind of new 3d core (don't know much about it), that I didn't want to tell
you to strictly buy a voodoo card. (I think the riva's are non-3dfx).
Personally, I've just got a regular old v2 backed by a 233mhz pII, and I
can't complain.

About the cd player, I think that the faster they are, the longer it takes
them to speed the cd up to read it, so in stop and start circumstances, a
12x can accually be faster!

If you live in the UK then you should go to Choice peripherals.

I thought CDs started to melt at 40 speed.
Does it run well, or does it jam and make horrible noises.

Go to that auction in miami where they've got all the stuff they've seized
of drug runners.
It was well cheap.

Haven't encountered CDs melting yet, although they do yet hot, it's no-where
near hot enough to melt...
...and if it did it'd set the whole computer ablaze, and I don't think that
the company would manufacture a product that would do such things.

Sorry I exagerrated slightly. Doesn't it make horrible whirring noises and
clinking when you put a bad CD in.

No horrible whirring noises, just was very loud the first week we had it.
