[snip with the industrial-strength cable-cutters] >A bit like when you type dnmonsters in Duke Nukem 3D, a game >which continues to entertain me much more than quake ever did, or quake 2 >for that matter. Hmmm, I played it for a bit and found it annoying more than anything... >I think sin and halflife are also better than quake and >quake 2 but my computer is too shite to run them, which is a good thing >really. Never played Sin, but Halflife definitely - IN SINGLE PLAYER. I am incredibly disappointed in the halflife network code and everything, the player animations are pretty poor... I mean, the models move around like it's a badly designed robot, no realistic movement or anything, and it's like it's on a conveyor belt or something... Skeletal animation? Big deal if you only use it like they have... Quake and Quake2 still can't be beaten for long-term multiplayer interest. >I spend too much time on this evil invention as it is. Hahahahah ditto! > Quake 3 is >going to have to be really really good to cut any butter in the fps genre. Quake3 isn't competing with any previous fps, because it is designed only for multiplayer use. Sin and Halflife are fantastic when you're working through the single player levels, because you can include atmosphere, a storyline (optional, according to some software companies, id included) etc, but single player does not sustain a game. Monsters included in the levels nearly always react in exactly the same way, and bots (so far) are still a long way short of a human player... Multiplayer against REAL opponents is definitely the only thing which keeps a game in use months and months after it is bought. Quake 3 is simply going to be a more visually spectacular, customisable deathmatch game - if you want a game with a storyline, don't buy it. If you want a game which will keep you playing for months to come, buy something like Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament (they'll probably have their act together by then) and play against real people. >Halflife and sin to a lesser extent have set quake 3 a task which it is >unlikely to live up to. I disagree. Halflife and Sin set an example which the fps has been heading down for a long time, and leading it in a big way too. Quake3 is going down a different, although controversial path, and in my opinion will be all the better for it. After all, id are going to license their Quake3 engine to companies, (like they did for Sin and Halflife, remember) meaning that companies who WANT to follow the single-player concept, can have a super-powerful 3d graphics engine to go with it, as well as probably some of the finest network code. >On a different subject altogether, what's trinity, is this quake 3 or >something different. I was under the impression that Trinity was what Quake3 was before it became Quake3 - it was a graphics engine which was meant to blow the socks off everything else around, but id decided to cut back some of the features and turn it into a multiplayer game, more as an experiment in marketing than anything else.
