Bots in add-on maps?

I've played through the default Q3 and TA maps, and now I'm trying out
a bunch of maps I downloaded from FileFront.

Of course, many of these maps don't include specific bot support,
since the makers want their maps to be used in online games.

I keep getting some message that just seems to mean the bots can't
join.  Why is this, and is there a way to get the bots to join?
