Punk Buster prevents quake 3 from starting

It took awhile to confirm it but punkbuster prevents quake 3 from
starting. It either doesn't start at all, or gives an error dialog box
saying it won't start.
When I delete the pb directory - everything works fine. Obviously very
annoying and almost all servers on line require pb to be enabled..I
have reinstalled quake and applied the 1.32 patch. I have updated pb
and spent a couple hours trying to get this to work. What is the deal
here ? This is a legit copy, bought the tin as soon as it came out and
it used to work fine, the only difference I can think of is that I now
have a dell 24 inch lcd - shouldn't be a factor. I have also deleted
the q3config and striped my cfg file down in case it was something to
do with that...

any help with this ??
