I am looking for some input on the following idea for Quake (and Quake2), just post here with suggestions/comments on it. Sorry if it takes on a Capture the Flag bias, it is a cut and paste job: Currently, CTF has .wav files like "Is our base safe?", "Base is secure, sir", "Incoming! seal the hatch!", "No, sir", "Cover me" --etc. I like them since it makes more sense than trying to read what someone typed in the middle of a fight. The one gripe I have is that it is very limited what you can convey. I am going to start working on word parsing to overcome the limited communications in CTF. Simply put, the current way we use the .wav files is to make one or more sentences which we bind to a key. With word parsing, you would bind a series of words in an order to make a sentence. Thus, you wouldn't be as limited in what you say. Here are the "one word" .wav's I am looking at now: you, I, enemy, the, our, your, cover, need, in, is, me, base, flag, ammo, weapons, health, secure You can bind several of these small .wav's together and form a sentence. As long as everyone downloaded these one word .wav's, they could understand what you are trying to say, even though you customized it to say something they don't have (and they will still hear it). Some examples of what you can construct: Is the base secure, the base is secure, our base is secure, the enemy base is secure, secure the enemy flag, you cover me, you cover our flag, enemy in our base, I cover you, weapons secure, I need weapons, I need health, cover enemy base, I in enemy base (you get the message)....etc. The only down point is that the sentences would be without inflection, since a word could be placed anywhere. You give that up for more variety and I am trying to compensate by making the voice sound more mechanical and lower quality (like using a walkie-talkie, and keep the file size down). Another point that I would like to see done in Q2: allow a message mode to allow only nearby team mates hear what you are saying (like is the case from the gun noise/further away don't hear it or hear it at a reduced volume). That way, you don't have confusion about when you say "cover me!" and everyone on your team is looking at one another trying to figure out who you said it to, even those on the other side of the map -- Just a suggestion, if someone wants to bring it up to the Q2 programmers. chris.

This isn't exactly the same thing, but it's related to what you're working
on. FYI.
My clan (C9) and the Stanford Graphics Quake Project put together a little
thing called "quakecom" a while back for doing audio communication during
Clan matches, on unmodified Quake servers. There's a readme file at
http://lemur.stanford.edu/clan9/downloads/quakecom/readme.txt
and a Linux version of the program at
http://lemur.stanford.edu/clan9/downloads/quakecom/linux/quakecom
Basically it's a proxy program that everyone on your team would have to run
between their client and the Quake server. You would also have to
distribute to each team member the set of .wav files to use and a config
file.
We never really released this publically because
1) we couldn't get the SGQP guys motivated to compile a Windows
version of the Quake library of theirs that we were using :-) and
2) it seemed a little wasteful to use a whole proxy for doing this.
What if you also wanted to use the FAQ-Proxy? Then you have to
set up and connect through both proxies, what a mess.
The answer is that we've handed the code over to the FAQ-Proxy guys who are
more than likely going to include this feature into the next version of the
FAQ-Proxy, along with other features for team communication. And probably
soon, since I think they're shooting to have it available for MPOG's
upcoming clan tournament.
