In a place known as alt.games.quake2, n...@spam.com (Pekka) was running
around screaming something about "Re: Celeron vs. P3 for gaming?".
Before the men in white coats arrived and took him away, he managed to
say the following:

It's true that the Pentium 3 is "expensive". But it _is_ faster than
the Celeron by 10-30%, depending on what you're doing with it. For
gaming, the P3 is definitively better of the two. A P3- Coppermine 600
is about as fast as a Celemine overclocked to 850 MHZ...

He's right, listen to him ;-)
Whatever you do, go for an AMD chip anyway - they're good nowdays(the
athlon is quite a leap from the K6 series of CPUs...), and offer by
far the best bang for the buck. You can get an Athlon TB 800 quite a
lot cheaper than a P3-800, and the Athlon is even a tad bit faster...
The Duron outperforms the celeron by a lot (IIRC it was according to
tests about 0-10% slower than an Athlon on the same clock speed), and
is by far the best choice of the current processors on the market if
you're looking for the "best performance with lowest
investment"-processor...

"Forty-two! Is that all you've got to show for seven and a half million years' work?"
"I checked it very thoroughly, and that quite definitely is the answer. I think the problem, to be quite honest with you, is that you've never actually known what the question is."
